Default Need opinions- What to do with free G2E

Hello all,
I am obviously new to the forum but I am also new to golf cars in general. I received a free 1991 yamaha G2E in relatively good condition. everything is present and in good condition. I have rebuilt many other things but never a golf car. I am sure it needs new batteries. From what I understand is with it being an old resistor type cart I can go to 48v from 36v by buying the correct batteries and upgrading to a 48v solinoid. I dont have a charger so I am trying to figure this out before I get one. The other question is whether the motor upgrade(EMP) I have seen on here will work with it being 48v. Sorry about it being long just wanted to give you knowledge of my situation.
Thank you in advance

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought all 1991's were G9s not G2s. Will you want to keep it a resistor cart or change it over to a controller cart for more run time and faster top end(not much)? I have a '91 G9 that I've up graded the motor on. I took it to Plum Quick and got their lowest cost up grade. My cart went from 12 mph to 19 mph with no other changes. I also have more torque and it's still a 36 volt resistor cart. I've invented a 12 volt boost for it and will install that as soon as I figure out what diodes to use. Carts are more fun to work on than cars and they are tons less expensive!! Have fun!!!

I may be mistaken. Like i said I am pretty new to this.
Serial # J56-200846
Ill look it up again online.
I think I got lucky with this one. The battery trays are not even rusted out.
I would prefer to leave it a resistor cart and up grade the Volts and/or possibly motor. It sounds like the motor upgrade may be the ticket. I was just curious because if i was going to upgrade the volts now would be the time.

I just looked it up for you and you're right it is a G2. Wow! I learned something today. If it were mine, I'd keep everything stock except the motor, which I'd up grade, and I'd go with the #4 gauge wires on everything. Should be all you need for long hours of good dependability. Have fun!!!

I am leaning towards staying 36 v and upgrading the motor and wires.

Putting 2 6volt batteries in the bag well. Connect them to the 2 motor leads through a cut-off switch and 2 diodes. When I need more speed or torque, I just turn them on to add 12 more volts to the motor only. The problem will be that you're either wide open or nothing. Sometimes it gets hairy if you don't cut them off quickly. Still trying to get the right diodes and working out other "bugs".
