Smile Lets talk batteries.

I picked up a used motor from a guy that had upgraded his cart so I've decided against doing a gas conversion on my 83 Yamaha G1E.
I know that the batteries are 6 years old on the cart so they don't have much life left if any.

I'm curious about the best way to go on batteries.

The cart needs 36 volts to run, is there a reason that people don't run 12 volt connected in such a way as to get 36 volts?

I know that you need enough amps and run time.
If the 12 volt has the same or more on those, is there a reason not to run them?

??? Not sure what you meant?

I was trying to figure out that since the pricing is similar on the batteries was there a reason why it wasn't done by people.

Is there a reason to stay with the 6 volt batteries?

The problem with using 12volt batteries is a matter of size vs. amp/hrs. vs $$$. As Club Car has found out, 12volt batteries in a golf cart don't provide the range and lifespan of a decent set of 6v or 8v batteries.

As for the 12volt battery that does have everything a cart needs, either the cost is very high or the battery won't fit without modifications.

Do a little searching on the forums for batteries and you'll find lots of good info that should educated you to the "why/why not" questions you have, and help you decide what is best for you.

?? where are you finding these prices? And what model of batteries? The automotive 12v will be the same price, but you won't get too far on them, and they will not last for more than a couple of years in a cart. The "Cold Cranking Amps" listed for 12v is NOT the same as the AMP/HR rating on deep cycle golf cart batteries. The golf cart batteries are rated at a 20hr discharge rate, where the automotive batteries are rated for momentary full power on a starting system. Now, 8v golf cart batteries are a trade off and work very well, just as well as a 6v setup, so depending on how you want to go, either will be fine and the cost will be similar.

Thanks for the reply.

That answers my question.

I tried doing a search but everything it brought up didn't really answer the question.

Seems like staying 6 volt is the way to go.
This is my first golf cart, so I'm trying to not make too many mistakes.
My budget won't allow it. LOL

Thanks again.

I'm glad this question was brought up. I am a newbie cart owner and have wondered the same thing. You can find 12v deep cycle batteries and 3 of them is definitely cheaper than 6 6v batteries. I too will stick with the recommended 6v batts for my G2 but 12v fit in the battery compartments fine. I did use regular 12v car batteries to test the motor before I sunk that much into my cart.

This question is brought up about once every 2 weeks a quick search of the site brought me this page of 10 separate discussions on the subject... Use the search button and select the google option from the drop down menu.
