suspesnion droop?
I was wondering if anyone can tell me the proper amount of droop that the front suspension on a G-22 should have? Droop, meaning the amount of sag.
When I jack the front of my cart up until the tires are JUST touching the ground, and let the jack down all the way, I am seeing just over 2 inches of droop. I have a fair understanding of suspension geometry and this seems excessive for a suspension that only cycles a few inches. I am also seeing a noticeable amount of camber when looking at the cart from the front. Just trying to get my bearings on the way it should be, before I approach a fix for the problem. Any input is greatly appreciated, SHMO |

Re: suspesnion droop?
How can that be normal? I would think that Yamaha engineers would at least get the camber, "close". The suspension droop just doesn't sound right to me either. Now I completely realize that this is a common trait with older yamaha carts. I have seen several examples on the readers rides section, but I question whether it is a premature wear issue, more so than a bad design. Massive amounts of camber along with 2/3rds of the travel being taken up in droop.....is no beuno!....haha

Re: suspesnion droop?
Check for bent parts, king pin wear, or some malady in your suspension. You didn't mention that in your first post!

I am not familiar with Yami front ends but why don't you post a pic of the front end to show what you are concerned with, maybe then someone will notice something. Just a thought.

Re: suspesnion droop?
Have you looked at the "droop" of a Ford lately? Pretty much the same thing happens. I've actually see as much as a 30 degree droop in a Yamaha front end and that was on a "Drive" model. The customer has owned the cart for 2 years now and still no noticable wear to the front tires......

Re: suspesnion droop?
I also have a 2004 G22 with bad sag. The inside of both front tires are wearing abnormally. I've replaced the worn bushings & bolts, and the king pins are all fine.
The only thing I can see that would cause the sag are worn shock absorbers. Not sure if this is correct or not. Anybody's else's opinion. |

Re: suspesnion droop?
Positive camber will wear the outside and negative camber will wear the inside of the tires. Check your toe on the cart if it is wearing abnormally. I think it should be 1/8" in at the front, not sure! Check the manual!!!

Re: suspesnion droop?
I am sorry. I should have elaborated more in my first post.
The king pins and bushings are tight and solid. The A-arm bushings have a very slight amount of play from front to back, solely because they are a rubber bushing, overall very tight. No maladies in the suspension. As for a background on myself, I have a pretty good working understanding of suspension geometry and design. Am I an engineer?, no. Have I custom built suspensions for race vehicles?, yes. My gut hunch is that the coils are sacked out. The droop I am referring to is 2+ inches. I am completely aware that ALL suspensions should have some amount of droop, but on a suspension that only cycles a few inches, that seems excessive. What I am seeing on this cart is a noticeable negative camber situation, meaning //-\\ . I realize that "some" camber is a good thing, but again this seems excessive. This pic is slightly misleading. The camber looks more prominent in person, but even in the pic it is noticeable. Thanks for the input guys, SHMO |
