pop pop pop burning smell, G1 1982 electric
Hey everyone,
I think I have big trouble with my 1982 G1 Electric, please help. Last year I rebuilt my hot dog cooker and I love it. It is now my hunting buggy. Lifted, Camo, all new 4 gage, new batteries, after much stripping and sanding, new selenoids, contacts, motor brushes, Same motor. Now to my problem, Sunday I had it out in the drive way cleaning battery posts "one at a time to make sure the were back in ther proper place" and general tightening of bolts and cables. My post was loose on the top of the resister plate on the end the motor cable hooks to, so I tightened it. it is the end of the coil bolt. Finished up cleaning, got on, put it in reverse, backed up about two feet and heard pop pop pop and smelled a small amount of burning. I imediatly shut it off raised the top and could see a tiny bit of smoke coming from the rubber brush cover. Now, nothing when I turn the key and press the pedal. I think I grounded something from the coil to the motor. Please tell me what I may have burned out. any help on where to start checking would be a great help. I hope not the entire motor.... Help Please, davidh51 |

I'm not a Yamaha guy but I did stay at a holiday inn and all these resistor carts work on the same principles ~ What rubber cover thing? At the speed wiper? Can you post a pic? Sounds like the wiper board may have taken a dump....

Your motor has 4 studs (is that what your talkig about?) 2-A1 and A2 (motor brushes) and 2- For S 1 and 2 for the field. Did a stud on the motor "burn up?" As Scotty said a pix's would be great.

Re: pop pop pop burning smell, G1 1982 electric
Thanks for the reply Go Dog,
The smoke and smell was from the rubber brush covers on the Motor housing. Pulling of these three covers give access to the motor brushes although you still have to pull the motor to change the brushes. I still get a click when I press the gass pedal and the wiper arm still goes forward and does not appear to be blackend. There is some black soot from under one of the motor brush covers but nou that way on the other two. Is it possible to burn out brushes and cause it to do nothing when the pedal is pressed? Thanks, davidh51 |

Re: pop pop pop burning smell, G1 1982 electric
Thanks smallblock,
All the motor posts look great, same as before, The only smell and soot and it wasn`t much came from the top rubber motor brush covers. No soot or burned wires connecting the selenoids or the control arm or contacts. Everything looks great. I think my problem seems to be motor related. Is it possible that I did nothing wrong and the motor chose this moment to go pop pop pop and does nothing. It is a 1982. Can motors go out that way? |

Re: pop pop pop burning smell, G1 1982 electric
Thanks,
I will pull the motor and check the brushes. How can I check the Comm? Does this sound like something that can be caused be a short from the coil to the motor. The bolt on on the back of the coil was the only thing I did that could have caused the sparks to fly. Everything else I did was so absolutly basic. I know taking the battery holddowns off and a couple of battery post to clean did not cause this, I do not thinkso anyway. |

Re: pop pop pop burning smell, G1 1982 electric
Hey thanks,
I think I know what and where the comm is? What I don`t know is how can I check and see if it needs replacing. I am in hopes it just burnt the brushes or melted a wire in there somewhere. |
