1985 / 1986 Sun Classic
I agreed to help a family friend out and restore this thing.... oh boy. I may have over committed here....
Here is what he wants to do - 1) Get it running 2) Restore it to original condition 3) Make it faster if possible #1 I am okay with...it needs batteries. The ever so famous quote "it ran when I parked it" was heard. #2 - the work part is easy...its finding the parts - like the original seat covers, decal sets, etc... anyone have suggestions? #3 - this is really a sparky. Short of replacing everything with newer components - I don't have any ideas. Is there a reasonable way to get rid of the coils and upgrade to a controller? I have built several carts - but I was always able to get parts for them... I'm really at a loss here! |

Re: 1985 / 1986 Sun Classic
I have a 87 Sc 36v, I just upgraded the motor from Plum Quick getting 14 mph now , new battery's and 4ga cables, as for seats you may need to find a independent upholstery shop to recover them which is what im doing SOON !, I haven't seen a good source for the odd parts for the SC. If you switch to a controller system better hold off on batterys since it would wise to upgrade to 48 volt at that time of a change over. Im going to stick with the resistor system for now , its running great. Post some pictures . Vince

Yours is a resistor cart as well? Any heat buildup issues?
Which motor did you get? |

Re: 1985 / 1986 Sun Classic
I learned from great minds here to drive it wide open when possible that helps the resistor to run cooler if I have that concept right. I got the PQ bandit the purple one . me and my daughter went for a long drive this past Sunday weather was great hit some hills, ran wide open pretty much the whole time, never saw the heat light on the dash as I did before the upgrade on the motor.

Have you heard of converting this cart to a solid state? I have read here that a Curtis PB-6 may fit - then it's just about the solenoid and controller.

BC, if you do all that you're talking about, please post some pics and some details on this build. I'm sure I'm not the only one interested! Good Luck!!!

Re: 1985 / 1986 Sun Classic
I will. I have built several custom carts before... this is a new one to me.
I don't know what will fit / what won't. Ideally - here is how I would like to see this go: Change out to solid state with a 500a Alltrax and 48v. Upgrade the motor to either something from D&D or EMP. I'm not worried about the rest of the cart right now - the 12v is fairly straight forward... Get the seats re-covered and have a new decal set printed up / or bring it in and get it painted. Not sure yet. It will also depend on the owner and his willingness to dig into his pockets. Deep. |

Re: 1985 / 1986 Sun Classic
Yea I'd like to see the change over also maybe the owner has deep pockets, are they going to put a back seat on it, I had a bench type frame built for mine, I didnt want something to bulky to take away from the shape of the cart there in a pic of it in the Design Center section. Im going to have the board covered to match the front seats. Where about in Flordia are you? Im about 35 north of Tallahassee.

Your choice for motors is ok, they are good companies. I'd rather you go with Plum Quick. Call Robbie at PQ and explain to him what you're doing. He will recommend what to do. Good Luck.

Re: 1985 / 1986 Sun Classic
Well - I put together the estimate. Now we'll see what he wants to do.
Basically - looking at putting in a 0-5K pot box along with an Alltrax 500a programmable controller - along with a 48v upgrade. New batteries, charger, etc... ought to be interesting. |
