Default G8 & G9 disc brake application

Flint was asking me about disc brakes for the G9 .... G11 - G22 was listed but what about the G8 and G9? Turns out the rear set will work for everything 1992 and up, Except the Drive. Prior to '92 Yamaha used a different rear end. So G8 and G9 have rear hydraulic disc brakes available.

1992 & up G8 and G9 and G14,16,19,20,22 gas & electric use the same rear hub OEM# JN3-G6514-00-00

Where's Dave when we need him!?

Scotty, you know I'll always awnser a PM Not shure what disc brake system your refering to but here's my thoughts..... Yamaha's G1's/G2/G9/G8/G11 and early G14's used what I call Yamaha style transaxles. They used a diff with bolt on axle tubes and one peice axles (splined axles into diff with a welded on axle flange/wheel studs, heck you couldn't even change the bearing if it went bad), although brake backing plates could be changed with later dana diff's. Then in 1995/96 late G14 and all others up untill the Drive, Yamaha used Dana transaxles, same as Ezgo, that is why the Ausco (did I spell it right?) will work. I guess what im trying to say is, unless you had custom axles (splines on both ends and the Dana style hub) I don't know of a disc brake kit that would work on the earlier Yamaha transaxle assy's. Did that make sence?

Yes, but my book is telling me that 1992 and up are all the same hub (Dana) We are looking into fitting the wheelsca hydraulic brakes on the 1994 G9... which has the same OEM # hub as a G22....

Ok, you got me. Yes there was a G9E (when they went to solid state controller system) that they changed to a Dana style transaxle. So yes it could work in that situation. But no G2/G9/G8/early G11's gassser's had anything but Yamaha style diff's. As long as you have a Dana style diff ...should work.

Allright, scuse my ignorance here but.... as long as you can remove and replace the old hub with the new hub and rotor, shouldn't it just be a matter of mounting/ aligning the new caliper??

Very true Flint. Can anyone send me one of those kits (no charge)? I'll try it on Wilson

Hey, me first!!!!!!!!!
Actually willing to pay for mine, if things work out I'll be sure to let everyone here know. My thought is that even two big disks just on the rear will be an immense improvement over the stock drums........

Wilson's one of those rare G8 breeds........ no reason if it works for the G9 it shouldn't work for the Wilsons and G2's of the world too......

Same diff's, just differant axle tubes and axle lengths. Heck it would work for G1's also.
