Default Question about batteries

I'm new here and have been finding out some good info reading these post. I have a question about batteries though. I read an article that used 9 12v deep cycle batteries to get a 36v output. They wired 3 sets of 3 batteries parallel then wired the 3 sets in series. I understand the cost in all buying new but I'm able to get 12v deep cycle batteries cheaper. I just can't get 6v batteries as cheap. I wanted a cart for where I work to haul tools and such around. I found one that the frame was rusted into. So I just built a new frame and added about 3' into it so I have the room now for batteries. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.
