1999 G19E Relay problem /inconsistent power

So, I have a '99 G19E that I recently bought. I put new batteries in it and it wasn't working so i tried troubleshooting (with help from this forum

) and got to the relay. I "jumped" the terminals on the relay, got a big *** spark but then the motor was running (with the rear wheels jacked up. However, it was running inconsistently (Speed up -> slow down, repeat). Then all of a sudden it sparked again and stopped running. Fuse is intact, all connections are the same as they were when it was running and I'm out of ideas. I know I need to replace the relay but I'm concerned that spark messed up something in the controller. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
