Cool 2010 G29 convert to 6x8v?

I am having my 2010 Drive delivered today. Nice cart with
factory lights and full enclosure, 10" Chrome wheels, split windshield,
voltage converter etc, with PTV code. However,it still has the
4x12v battery setup, (date code on batts (trojan 1275s) is August 09.

I checked the batteries before buying and may have a weak cell or two
according to the hydrometer. The floats kept sticking to the side of the tube so it was hard to gauge and I had limited time. The 4 batteries read out to 12.28, 12.43, 12.35, and 12.29 volts , but hadn't been charged in 5-6 days.
So I'm assuming I may be buying a pack within a year or so ( maybe less).
The cart is otherwise exceptionally clean and shows very little use. It looks like new.

There is lots of info on the CC conversion process to 6x8v batts, but I have not found anything on the Yamaha. Local dealer says there are no
electronics that need to change, just the batts, wires and clamps. He said that
yamaha used to have a conversion kit, but doesn't have it anymore.

Just wondering if anyone out there has done a conversion and what might be entailed that I haven't forseen? To me it looks like the battery clamps and cables are about all that is needed, but the yamaha parts catalog doesn't reallly show the tray the batteries are attached to, so I don't know if that is also needed.

This is my first cart (just moved into a 9 hole executive course community) so I'm a newbie, but I also have 45 years of electronics servicing under my belt.
Since the course is only 9 holes the cart will probably only see light use ( 4-5 rounds a week at 9 holes), so I don't know if it will be necessary to actually go to the 6x8 configuration.

Also the current batteries have the Trojan watering system...however the batteries are overfull...near the top of the cap. I plan to remove some after delivery and before charge to keep from boiling out acid in my garage or driveway. Any comments on that system? I am considering removing it because the caps are so hard to get off to visually check the individual cells.
( the current wires are too close to the caps and need to be re-routed or lengthened to facilitate removing the caps).

Unhappy Re: 2010 G29 convert to 6x8v?

Update...after carefully looking at the parts list and examining the cart
the battery tray is actually the "footrest" part of the frame, and although not too expensive ( ~$150 plus shipping), there are a lot of added new support parts needed for the 2011 and newer G29s to support the batteries. Not to mention the fact that the body would have to be removed to install the new parts. Not a simple procedure.

The existing T1275s are recessed about 3/4" - 1" into the tray, and (unfortunately) only have exactly 10" between the two banks. T875s and most substitutes are 10 3/8" L.

1 8V Battery could be placed there, along the same axis as the other 4 ( in the existing trays) ..but there isn't room to place two, as the motor and the charging socket are in those lines of direction at about 16.5" apart.

The existing 12v batteries are the same width as the 8V, and there is no room to move them within the tray recesses to gain the needed 1/2", or so, which would allow the 2 added batteries to mount between the other 4. There is about 15.25" of space between the charge socket and the motor, so two batteries could be placed there...if there was about 11" of space between the existing banks.

The way this might be able to be done is to lay a complete new battery platform above the old one in the center area, leaving the 2 outer 8V batteries in the old receptacles and placing 4 new 8v between them ( there is 25" between the two outer batteries)but in the opposite orientation. Then you could easily lay out the six batteries in the space, but would not be able to use an under seat storage tray as the batteries will be higher and closer to the seat bottom. Battery clamps would also be needed to be engineered. However, it can be done...but probably not by the factory.

I guess the cost of replacing the footrest frame parts in labor is why they don't make the conversion available anymore. Too much cost...plus the 6 new batteries.

So I guess I should now ask...how happy are G29 owners with the T1275s battery life? I've seen some negative opinions but no explanation of why. Are people switching to US or other suppliers? I have a price of about 820 to replace the pack with new trojans, but haven't searched for a cheaper price yet.

I have put 6 -8v in a g29. I put 2 batteries in the middle. They did hang over some but I built a tray with the front and rear turned up so batteries couldn't slide forward and back. They drilled holes for new rods and hold downs.

Craig,
Thanks. So you were able to get the 2 batteries between the
existing 4? I have been looking for type 24 battery trays on line
but the clamps might be a problem. Did a dealer do it for you?
Did you see a difference in performance/range?

the batteries did fit between the 4. I did it myself. No battery trays ,just bent some metal with about 4" lip on each side of batteries and bolted them down with 2 rods and 1 holder.
As far as performance I did have cart long enough to know.

I have done 2 conv on the drives.

did basically what Craig did.

BUT if you want to stay 12V go US BAttery. they have teh Best !2v right now. Trojan fails alot of test with anything over 6V. US battery is takin the lead in almost every test b/t teh 2 batteries.

EZGO and BBB have already gone to US batteries.
I have heard yamaha is going for 2013 carts, and I have no idea what CC is using.

I used 8V Trojan batteries. I made a hold down setup to hold the 2 batts in the middle. SORRY I don't have pics of what I did. I havn't seen that cart sine I built it for the customer.

I know Yamaha offers the 8V setup over the 12V setup. I am not sure how much a new designed tray would cost for the cart. THAT may be another option.
