Default G16 slows down going uphi..

My mom moved into a 55+ community a few years ago and with the home came a 2001 Yamaha G16e. The cart looks like it has been abused and not well taken care of and never really ran very good, and I know nothing about electric golf carts. Mom only uses the cart to pick up her mail, drive to friends home in the community and drive to and from the club house. The cart really slows down when driving up a slight grade, almost to a crawl, and that bugs her. The neighbor told us most bad driving carts need batteries, and we trusted him and I installed all new 6 volt batteries and all new 4 gauge cables between the batteries and to the solinoid. I did not replace all the rest of the 6 gauge cables.

I am new to this forum but have read many articles in this forum and I dont think moms cart is a coil style I think it has a controller, and it does have a bad forward and reverse switch. When she puts it in forward it does not always move, it seems like there is a dead spot in the switch. But if she puts in back in neurtral and then back in forward it usually jumps forward.

Now to the problem, the batteries did not fix the slow uphill problem which is what she does not like about this cart. I have read that the older coil carts had this slow uphill problem, but dont think this cart is a coil style. I have also read that a new motor is for speed and a new controler is for torque. Does torque mean faster uphill performance?

Also the cart has an auto shut off charger. Not sure how long this should run, it usually only stays on for about one hour, even when I installed the new batteries.

Mom is on a fixed income and my real question is what next? Replace the switch? or more cables and controller? or the charger?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Mike

I have the same cart, I am relatively new to golf carts but I can tell you that my charger usually runs for an hour or so if I have put very little ride time on the batteries. What is the voltage across the batteries after a full charger?

Just an update the second time I charged these new batteries the charger stayed on about 8 hours and the charge across the set of 6 batteries was 38.9 volts. The cart still slows way down going up hill. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions on how to make some additional speed going uphill?

To get more torque you can upgrade the controller that will help with going uphill. It sounds like your battery charger is good. How steep is the hill?

I never really knew how steep the hill is so I just brought up google earth and the club house is 1100 feet from Moms house and Moms house is 40 feet higher than the club house. Is that steep?

She had a different symptom today. Today she was driving to the mailbox when the car simply stopped. no forward no reverse, the backup buzzer would sound off but nothing else. I had to drive over and push it back to her home. A few hours after I finished my work at home I went over with a volt meter to try and run the circuits but by that time it would run. Not really sure why but it ran again. Usually when backing out of the garage it doesnt alway go into forward (seems like a dead spot in the forward/reverse switch) but if she moves the forward/reverse handle back and fourth a couple times it will start to move forward. it has never just stoped running like today.

Seems like her cart has many problems, I have purchased a forward/reverse switch but have not had time to install it yet. Anyone with suggestions or help would be greatly apprieciated.

I have the same problem with my G16E. New batteries, new 2ga cables. Forward / reverse switch seems fine. Getting a good charge off the charger (37plus volts)

It's a dog on mild hills and a slug on steep ones. The Club Cars I drove at my last job and the EZGo at my current job would blow the 16E away. What should I look at first and any instructions on testing would be helpful.

Thanks
Chris

Helloooooo....... Any suggestions? I'm tempted to throw a conversion in it to try and solve the problem. With my luck it would be the motor.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

You should probably start your own thread. You'll get more help that way.

G16 is a "solid state" cart, no resistor coils. G16e has notoriously bad F&R. Any signs of funky operation with f&r should make you suspect it as your source of problems. Convert it to a ezgo style (search the site for instructions) or get a kit from ScottyB to fix it. Do not waste $230 on another yamaha G16 f&r.

Thanks for the responses guys. My F&R seems to operate correctly. I think it's time for the 1998 G16E to go away. I was just offered a 2007 EZGO TXT (PDS)36 volt and I hope it's not a case of jumping out of the pan into the fire.
