Default 2013 Yamaha PTV factory option speed kit

I ordered a factory speed kit for my 2013 Yamaha PTV from my local Yamaha dealer. After I placed the order I got a call back from the dealer they informed me that Yamaha corp says that previous owner had already purchased the speed kit for my serial number and that it may have just unprogrammed itself somehow. it currently tops out at 17 mph. Now they're not quite sure how to proceed.
Has anybody here done the speed kit for the Yamaha PTV.
Also when I do finally get my cart into the shop to get reprogrammed
I would like the highest possible speed. What setting should I put the speed kit at. also can I have highest possible speed plus Regenerative braking

If it goes 17, it has speed code. May be able to tweak a mph or two out of it. It cant be set above 14 without speed code. Look at the controller, it should have 2 stickers on it if it has speed code, second sticker will have "PTV speed code - ######" printed on it. If only one sticker, look for 6 number code written on controller.

So if my controller already has the speed kit, as you pointed out that it most likely has it, does that mean the dealer can reprogram it for me to try to increase speed. If so the dealer only wants to charge $25 for the computer use. I understand that it seems silly to try to increase 1 or 2 mph, but I was also hoping to make the regen breaking more aggressive

Those can both be done, but you have to have the unique number (ptv speed code). Using the generic code will uninstall the speed code (easy to re-install, IF you have the number). Setting "A" will give you maximum speed, And maximum regen braking. Settings A through E will not be present if speed code is not installed. The numbers Do Not represent exact mph setting

I have a 2012 with the PTV. It will go 19mph on a level surface but when climbing hills...that's another story. It really lacks low end torque. In fact, while going up hills, I can't even keep up with a fleet EZGO without a speed chip.

The dealer is telling me that low end torque is sacrificed in order to get the higher speed. I'm having a hard time with that.

Is it true that a 10 year old EZGO will outperform a new Yamaha?

That is not totally true. There are 2 main factors causing this trouble.

#1 - It has a 265 amp controller, too small for what you are asking of it. (main problem)

#2 - the 4- 12v batteries "sag" or "droop" (big voltage drop) when put under any big loads.

You could put a bigger controller (FSIP offers one, but i think it sucks, i built my own setup using a Alltrax 400DCX). That will help, but "weak-by-design" 12v batteries will hate life with a bigger motor controller, and range (and battery lifespan) will suffer. All yamahas we order have 8- 6v Trojan batteries from the factory (best setup available). You could do that upgrade yourself using all OEM yamaha parts, but it requires disassembling the whole cart. The whole floor is part of the battery tray. Its not "crazy expensive", but it is alot of work. Some of the stuff they told you is true "in theory", but they are not telling the whole story. The main problem is too small controller, followed by too weak batteries. Oem "SEPEX" motors do not have the same torque as "SERIES" motors have, but they do have speed benefits, a similarly powered "sepex" motor will never have the same torque as a "series" motor (this is less noticable with a big controller).

Can PTV be installed with an after market motor? I just got a 08 with a 10 hp Admeral motor , or do I need a new controller?

I don't know if this makes a difference regarding the lack of low end torque...

I have a 2012 Yamaha YDRE with 6 - 8v Trojan T 875. The motor is made by Changsha Hitachi model DM 430-06a. The controller is made by Moric model # JW2-H6510-01 (it's 290 amps).

When I contacted the dealer about the lack of torque when going up an incline, he responded:

"Yes I've done due diligence and don't like the answers provided to me. Its my understanding in order to get extra top speed we sacrifice low end torque? Frankly this makes no sense when you take in account the cars your comparing them to are EZGO TXT 48vt cars which should run the same or worse than yours. My thoughts are I need to drive your car my self and do some investigating. Your thoughts?"

Of course, when when I told him that he is welcome to drive my car anytime....he never responded.


Is this the way Yamaha designed it, with poor torque?

Wussy controller, yup... I care little what "they" (moric/yamaha) say about the amp rating on the moric controller, its weak. I have measured a input vs. output voltage difference of over 4.5v at cruising speed, attempting to hit top speed (full throttle). That is a sure sign of a weak (underpowered) controller. A respectable I vs. O difference is 1 volt or less. This is a different example, but applies just the same, The early RXV had a danaher controller, the newer one has a curtis controller, by the book nearly identical specs, the danaher was a respectable performer in stock form with a lift kit and big tires, the curtis cant climb for crap. The ratings are kinda just numbers they throw around. X number of amps available for 1 second vs X number of amps available for up to 30 seconds, the same X number of amp rating, much different results. Alot like buying a cheap 500 watt car stereo amp, or a good 500 watt car stereo amp, there is a huge power difference. The moric has been weak since day one, with the only noticable changes being slight throttle response tweak changes over the "-00" to "-32" model range ("-32" may not be the newest revision, i try to avoid oredeing them). These are some of the reasons i was compelled to build my own system using a DCX400. The last thing wou would want to do is to install high speed gears to make up for this speed/torque problem, that will almost guarantee a controller failure before the warranty is up (at least in the terrain im in). I have not had much trouble with the "hitachi" motor, far better than the GE it replaced. As far as the "admiral" motor question in this thread, "sepex" motors require a controller with field map characteristics that match, so im not sure how it will last, but its still a small controller for HD motors. But a PTV code can be installed on any moric controller.
