Exclamation Left Rear Axle Housing Leak?

Hello,

Purchased a 2009 Yamaha Electric on Saturday. I noticed upon looking underneath at the axles that the left had significant grass/debris build up. This was a contrast to the right axle housing that was clean. I assumed correctly that grease (gear oil?) was the binding agent for the debris. The pictures show the axle after I had wiped most of the grass off by hand.

Upon looking at the transaxle and brake parts diagram I'm worried that the axle bearing may be worn and causing a minor gear oil leak. The rear end gears are noisy compared to a new Yamaha electric I've driven so I'm also concerned that the oil level may be low which would have damaged the gears over time. Haven't had time yet to test this theory by checking the level.

Hopefully the pictures will help tell the story.

Thoughts?

The real problem is the axle shaft seal, which, of course has to be changed from inside the axle. That means splitting the case open. Has nothing to do with the sealed bearing, it only has oil behind it because the seal is leaking. You might get a chance to look into those noisey gears and bearings after all.
