Battery Setup and Options in Yamaha Drive
Hey everyone, thought I would open up a can of worms and talk about batteries:) So I have a 2012 Drive which has the Trojan t-875 8v set up and I know many here also have the 4 12v set up. I am thinking of upgrading the pack and want to know the best options. As for me, I want to stick with Trojans, but I can't decide on staying with the 8v's or adding 2 more and going with 6v's. Can someone elaborate on t=which would be the best and why? If I am going to spend the money I want to get the best I can buy and I have space in the tray for any configuration. In addition, I am assuming my current DPI charger will work and as a last question where Can I get pre-made high quality battery cables for the Drive?
Thanks in advance! Josh |

Re: Battery Setup and Options in Yamaha Drive
Josh---I did a 5 mile run yesterday (max 10MPH cause I had my Grandkids on board) with 3 adults and 2 kids on board. I let it rest for 45 minutes after parking it and the voltage was 50.9. Thought that was pretty good. I put 8 6 volts in my last cart and IIRC the at rest voltage on the same run was 51.2. That is not enough difference to make me want to change from 6 8s to 8 6s. The extra weight and cost doesn't seem worth it to me. Are your 2012 batteries already failing?
I emailed ScottyB at carts unlimited about a larger cable set for a 6 8volt drive. He said he did not have our cart in his data base but if we give him the measurements, he would be glad to make up cable sets for us. His cables are probably as good as you can get. |

Unless you need lots of range, I would go with 6 8's. (save the weight and cost)

Re: Battery Setup and Options in Yamaha Drive
I looked at the cost and it's really only a difference of about 150 bucks but it is about 140 more pounds. My batteries are not failing but I could easily get 400 bucks for my pack so I am thinking of doing the upgrade earlier.

Re: Battery Setup and Options in Yamaha Drive
I like the 8, 6 volt set up. It is a little more weight but to mean more weight means more lead. A t-605 is really common and cheapest but they make one a little bit better for just a bit more, a t-105. If your wanting to really get some range the also make a 125 and a 145. The 145's are expensive and weigh almost as much as a 12v

Re: Battery Setup and Options in Yamaha Drive
Well after hours and many different reasons I decided to buy the 8 t-105's. They will be here tomorrow. It will add about 118lbs to my overall weight so I am guessing it will affect my top speed slightly. I will test tomorrow to have a good comparison. I have not had a new set of batteries before so is there anything specific I need to know or just charge fully before using?
Just for reference around price. I was quoted the ranger 160 for 169 but it would rake a month to get or the t105 for 115 Thanks everyone! Josh Last edited by joshualmarley; 06-19-2014 at 11:04 PM.. Reason: Add price |

Re: Battery Setup and Options in Yamaha Drive
A month??!! Even tho we are in our slow season (all the snow birds are gone), we still get batts delivered once a week. When everyone comes back (who didnt do anything to care for their batts while they were gone, or listen to our advice) it will be battery time again for me. Folks would be much happier with their carts if they followed the directions to care for the carts while they wer away (have the same people who looked after their houses also check-up on their carts). Even with a DPI, i still would prefer that someone "drives it around the block". Check it out, check battery water, check the tire pressure, ect while they are away. For max range, and life, get some T105s (or better, but T145s are crazy$$).
