Although the serial number system may seem confusing, at least it is pretty consistant (except for later model G1s and the JW8 drive that i have never seen yet, they use JCx now). Pretty easy to identify, and the list is on yamahas website. Jxx-0xxxxx is first model year of that design Jxx-1xxxxx is second year of that design, and so on and so on. This description is not perfect, but will point you in the right direction.
