Default rouble with old electric Yamaha

I have an old electric Yamaha golf cart. It was running fine until today. The kids were riding it and they brought it up to me and the accelerator pedal was stuck in the midway position. When you pushed it all the way down the cart stopped and when you pulled it all the way up the cart would take off. I got under the cart and found a rod that runs from the pedal to a box in the middle of the cart. If I disconnect this rod the cart seems to be fine. The rod appears to be bent and out of adjustment. What is the box for? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
