Battery or Charger?
I'm the proud new owner of a 1997 Yamaha G16E. I don't know the history of the cart and am trying to troubleshoot a problem with charging the batteries. The previous owner supplied me with a Stanley GBCPro charger. I hooked it up and let it charge the batteries for at least 2 days yet the LED display never gets above 5.7. Yesterday, I pulled one battery out and connected only it to the charger. Same voltage. This morning I took a multimeter and measured the voltage off the alligator clips while the charger was on and attached to the battery. Still 5.7.
In Rapid charge mode, should the charger be supplying more that 5.7 Volts? Or does it only supply as much as the battery voltage? The previous owner told me the batteries were less than 2 years old so I'm thinking that the charger is bad. Of course there is a chance he's being less than truthful... Thanks for your help! Alan... |

Re: Battery or Charger?
That charger is the wrong charger for a cart. Some work some dont and their price reflects the quality. Buy a smart charger for your cart and dont look back.

Re: Battery or Charger?
Get a DVM so we can see the actual voltage of the batteries. Also are they six volts or eight. What is the total pack size?

Re: Battery or Charger?
Thanks for the replies. Its a 36V cart with 6 6 volt batteries.
I went to Walmart and purchased a cheap 6 volt charger just to see if I could fully charge one battery. When connecting the charger, it showed the battery was 10% charged and then ran for about 6 hours. After it was complete, I used my DVM which read 5.91V. Based on what I've read on this forum that's too low but it's more than what the Stanley charged it to. Does that mean if I had a "real" golf cart charger, I could get it over 6V? Thanks, Alan... |

Re: Battery or Charger?
Do your batteries have water in them 1/4" above plates? A6v or 12v charger would be fine on a single or two in series respectively for charging. But a pack or battery will not charge at 5.7v. You could have bad batteries. Try load testing or the sg of batteries and report those findings. My 6v batts in my pack get up to around 44 in my yami. Look inside the batteries as well they could be heavily sulfated for never getting really charged.

Re: Battery or Charger?
Good read here
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/extre...-tutorial.html Your cheap 6v charger wasnt for a remote control car was it. If you have a car charger put that to two of them and see if u can get the voltage up and hold. |

Re: Battery or Charger?
Just to close this thread, I had a local cart tech diagnose the issue. It was the GBCPRO that failed. Once the batteries were connected to a working charger that charged.
Thanks for your help. |
