Default Battery or Charger?

I'm the proud new owner of a 1997 Yamaha G16E. I don't know the history of the cart and am trying to troubleshoot a problem with charging the batteries. The previous owner supplied me with a Stanley GBCPro charger. I hooked it up and let it charge the batteries for at least 2 days yet the LED display never gets above 5.7. Yesterday, I pulled one battery out and connected only it to the charger. Same voltage. This morning I took a multimeter and measured the voltage off the alligator clips while the charger was on and attached to the battery. Still 5.7.
In Rapid charge mode, should the charger be supplying more that 5.7 Volts? Or does it only supply as much as the battery voltage?
The previous owner told me the batteries were less than 2 years old so I'm thinking that the charger is bad. Of course there is a chance he's being less than truthful...

Thanks for your help!

Alan...

That charger is the wrong charger for a cart. Some work some dont and their price reflects the quality. Buy a smart charger for your cart and dont look back.

Get a DVM so we can see the actual voltage of the batteries. Also are they six volts or eight. What is the total pack size?

Thanks for the replies. Its a 36V cart with 6 6 volt batteries.
I went to Walmart and purchased a cheap 6 volt charger just to see if I could fully charge one battery. When connecting the charger, it showed the battery was 10% charged and then ran for about 6 hours. After it was complete, I used my DVM which read 5.91V. Based on what I've read on this forum that's too low but it's more than what the Stanley charged it to.
Does that mean if I had a "real" golf cart charger, I could get it over 6V?

Thanks,

Alan...

Do your batteries have water in them 1/4" above plates? A6v or 12v charger would be fine on a single or two in series respectively for charging. But a pack or battery will not charge at 5.7v. You could have bad batteries. Try load testing or the sg of batteries and report those findings. My 6v batts in my pack get up to around 44 in my yami. Look inside the batteries as well they could be heavily sulfated for never getting really charged.

Your cheap 6v charger wasnt for a remote control car was it. If you have a car charger put that to two of them and see if u can get the voltage up and hold.

Alan---Not to second guess you or anything but did you get the manual with that Stanley charger? Do you know how to use it? There is a sequence you have to follow in order for it to function properly. If you are using the alligator clips it will not work well on a 36 volt pack. At least it didn't for me. Use the ring terminal ends or the proper plug for your charge receptacle. Plug the charger into the cart first then plug the AC cord in. After the charger comes on, wait until the charger finds the correct voltage. In your case 36 volts. After it finds the correct voltage, then select the type battery. After all that, then push the charge button. Select the display to show charge amperage. It should show around 10 amps if it is working properly. It will gradually drop charge amperage until it reads "full" if I remember correctly. The charger reading 5.7 indicates to me that you are not hooking it up properly. Make sure the charge wires are hooked to the first and last batteries in your pack. It seems like the charger is only reading one battery. Although the Stanley is a cheap charger and not high amperage, the one I had worked well for me both on 36 and 48 volts. You can download the manual here: http://www.baccusglobal.com/stanley/gbcpro.php

Just to close this thread, I had a local cart tech diagnose the issue. It was the GBCPRO that failed. Once the batteries were connected to a working charger that charged.

Thanks for your help.
