Default Local News Golf Cart Controversy

Here is a story on WCJB-TV 20 6 o'clock evening news:
http://www.wcjb.com/index.php?cat_id...Focus=news4006

Golf Cart Controversy
September 16, 2008
*Marion County residents face complaints about driving their golf carts on main roads.

As gas prices continue to go up, so do the number of golf carts on the roads of Marion County.

But due to an increasing number of complaints, residents may need to find a new form of transportation. Residents appeared in front of the Marion County commission Tuesday to share their side to the controversy. Marion County District Commander Mark Kelly said state statute doesn't allow golf carts to be used on average roads, like *Highway 40. In fact, they aren't even allowed on neighborhood roads, unless it's designated specifically for a golf cart.

"People are using the golf cart, and some of them obviously have done it for many years, and *it's just a matter of breaking the habit," Lt. Kelly said. He also said safety is another reason for not allowing golf cats on major roads, especially because golf carts are such low speed vehicles.

The commission instructed staff to look into whether golf carts will present any legal issues for the county. They agreed to revisit the issue at a later time.

My comments:
*TV-20 is in Gainesville (Alachua County) and Ocala (Marion County), FL.
*Highway 40 is a State Highway
I agree they shouldn't be on a State Highway. But they don't say if they were in the side ditch or on the pavement. Florida does have some wide side ditches and I see nothing wrong if they run in the ditch 10 feet from the pavement. There are places like bridges etc. where it gets pretty tight.
Again I say why let these Scooters and Mopeds on the State Roads and other roads running 15 MPH with an unlicensed 15 year old kid? Or a Farm Tractor operated by a 12 year old?

The only one I saw and heard complain on the TV was Lt. Kelly.

*I see! According to Lt. Kelly to fix the problem... "It's just a matter of breaking the habit."
LOL. What an intelligent creature.

The residents told the commission that the carts are the only means of transportation for some of these elderly citizens. And without them they would be house bound.

It's coming to a neighborhood near you...What do you think?

In Stuart they made golf carts legal on roads and our local news said golf carts are legal on most FL roads with a speed limit of 35mph or under

I see no trouble with GC on local streets that have speeds of 35 and under. With that said cars would have to give them the same respect as any other vehicle which includes bicycles. Every vehicle is entitled to a FULL lane of the road, I have riden a bicycle for many years and have been hit, beer bottles thrown at me and told that I am to ride on the sidewalk (against the law in Ohio). So can see why they are against GC on roads because people will run them over being in a hurry.

How can anybody with the position he has say what he did!

Slow moving vehicles are all over the roads these days. How can a 8 year old riding a bike in the middle of the road be safe? How can anybody riding a bike in the middle of a road in the turn or just over a hill be safe? I have came up on people who could care less where they are in relation to the front of my truck.

Did anyone see the golf cart on inside edition the other night. Talking about a girl from SC getting thrown off the cart and later died. I'm very sorry that it happened and know somewhat there pain since my daughter died three times in one day from her injuries in a car wreck but she survived.
I don't blame the car though because of her actions, as these people are doing. They are blaming the golf cart for what another human did or didn't do who was driving the cart.

WOW!

Very well said Andy4639.

I missed that Inside Edition show.
I too am so sorry for the parents of the girl.

That is the number 1 golf cart injury in Florida.
People fall or are thrown off.

If you saw the NASCAR golf cart race? Jeff Gordon was leading until he fell off!
And he got up and said, “I don’t know why I done that?”
Well, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it! LOL!

So, some laff and point at the seat belts and fire extinguisher on my cart.
But, the seat belts saved my Butt. It did not leave the seat when I rolled over in KY!

I had CPP install seat belts when the Swamp Bug had an engine transplant.

(I left the extinguisher and first aid kit at home.) Won’t leave home without them again!

Well, I have to pay the ER bill in KY now. It was a long time coming. So glad they were there. And thanks to all that help me.

Sorry for getting off the subject of Carts on the Street.
IT AIN'T NO FUN - WHEN SOMEBODY IS HURT OR KILLED!

Driving a cart is like driving anything you have to know the limits of your machine and your own abilities. When you feel the limit you have to respect it. My God children drive my Snowmobile powered cart all the time, the 7 year old drives pretty hard but I told him from the beginning how bad he could be hurt if he wrecks and he seems to respect it, so far no injuries. I did build the cart wider to help with stability, but my own time sharing has not let me finish the other safety features that I've had planned, since reading this thread I am going to finish the safety of the cart, I could not live with myself if either one of them got hurt bad or worse. Bill met my Godson, gave him a ride in his cart and Caleb still mentions "Flipper". We all want to have fun and be safe. It's my fault if they get hurt in my cart and even more if I didn't take the time to make it as safe as possible for them to play in. Thanks Bill.

When driving anything you must pay attention to what you are doing. I don't think anyone will disagree with this.
There were several mentions of golf carts being low speed as the problem. So if the golf cart can run with traffic is it still a problem? Of course I would subject the high speed cart to the same safety regulations that cars use.
