72v Precedent?
I am already in the market for a new motor, controller, cables, solenoid, etc. in order to get a lot more torque with 22-25mph top speed (19" tires). My batteries are already pushing 4 years so I was thinking, would 72v make sense instead? I've got an i2 Excel and really need to keep the regen braking for safety because the hills are brutal and my wife drives it. I'm told Alltrax has a new controller coming out that will work with this cart/combo but will it be 72V? What else am I missing for a conversion? Does anyone make 72V parts that work with regen braking?
Or am I not thinking clearly? |

Re: 72v Precedent?
Yes there are parts available for 72V regen systems. For example, GEM cars are 72V with regen.

Re: 72v Precedent?
I don't think Alltrax has any Sepex 72v controllers.
The Curtis 1244 Sepex controller works up to 80v and supports regen. |

Re: 72v Precedent?
As soon as Alltrax makes a 72 volt sepex controller I will be using one. I tried a Kelly 72 volt sepex controller, but with no real field map and only some max field amp settings it killed my sepex motor. Lesson learned.

Re: 72v Precedent?
Thanks for the replies. Sounds like Kelly is out and I am hearing that Alltrax will not have a 72v offering. The Curtis programmer is only going to add to the cost. Anyone know where I should go for a 72v motor?

Re: 72v Precedent?
I wouldn't think you would even need a 72 volt motor, just a field map tailored to whatever motor you have. I ran my stock CC sepex for a bit on the kelly, it died when I pushed to far on the field weakening looking for top speed. Thats where a correct field map makes all the difference.
It ran great up to 35mph, had more torque from a stop through top speed. I was pushing for more and burnt the armature. |

Re: 72v Precedent?
The PQ came after I toasted the sepex motor! If you try, use the curtis and get a good field map for your motor before you buy a controller. I am all for more volts, both my carts are 72 volts and I would go higher if 72 volt plus controllers weren't so expensive. Sepex motors require precise control or they die a smokey death.

Re: 72v Precedent?
The issue with the Kelly controllers and Curtis controllers is that You need to know what you are doing in order to calibrate them. Just having access to a free programmer, like the kelly, will not help.
It is really hard to get a "Field Weakening" curve from the motor manufactures, specially some small production run after market motors like used in golf carts. A qualified technician with a Curtis programmer can tune the controller for the specific Motor/Cart combination. A low "Minimum Field current" that allows a motor on stock size tires to go fast, may overheat the motor on the same cart if the tire size was increased. The requirements that you describe (25mph and decent torque) are very modest and You should be able to get them with a 48v Alltrax XCT controller (when they ship). You may want to check with Alltrax directly to see what motors that have created custom "Field Maps" for, and use that as a guide to what motor you may want to buy. |

Re: 72v Precedent?
Really can't help but agree here that with what your asking for that you can have quite easy with a 48 volt cart..... Where do you live that you insist that you must retain regen braking for your wife and the hills? I live in a VERY hilly 1000 acre hood in TN and had paved roads that the stock cart could NOT climb... Now while I'm going to lose some speed there no hill to stall me out anymore. As for my wife she has no clue what regen braking is and she also does not know that the cart no longer has regen braking; all she knows is that the brake pedal works when she presses it down..... Regen braking can also cause carts to go out of control on less than paved hilly surface too.....
