72 volt motor help
Hi all. This is my first post, but I've been a member for years. I just wanted to start by saying BGW has been a great help to me. A little background info, I've owned a custom car audio and upholstery shop for 22 years .About 4 years ago we added golf cart sales, service, and customizing . One of our more outrageous builds is an electric side by side. It started off as a early model Txt that we stretched and moved the seat I front of the stock battery tray . We also lowered the angle of steering column. With a custom roll cage and long travel suspension it really looks like a Side be Side. I'ts running 72 volts thru an Alltrax SPM 400 amp controller and reversing contractors. The rearend is a stock TXT with 8:1 gears. I'm looking for a motor that will handle high RPM at 72 volts. Even though the cart looks like it will handle some serious terrain it probably will never go off road. It's merely a demo cart to look impressive to customers and to scream up and down in front of our shop. I've built a few 35+ MPH carts with 36 volt motors and 48volt battery packs. The only reason I'm doing this one 72 volts is it looks impressive. I've contacted 3 of the popular motor builders and none would build me a motor. Infact they wouldn't even talk about it. Any suggestions? To any of you racers. Who out ther builds motors?

Re: 72 volt motor help
Buying motors for high speed and voltage can be hard, it shouldn't be but it is. I think most motor builders are worried about legal issue.
I currently have two 72 volt carts. My Club Car has a PQ Rattle Snake 2. I was never able to determine if it was built for 72 volts or not. It might be their 48 volt motor it might be custom wound. At 40+ mph its plenty fast. It has stock rear gears and 22 inch tires My Big Cart (formerly a Bad boy buggy limo) has two 36volt D&D torque motors. It has gone as fast as 31 mph on 72 volts. Thats as fast as I need for this big cart. 12.44:1 stock gears and 25 inch tires. You might have to order a +torque motor or a +torque +speed heavy duty motor and not tell them it will be 72 volt. |

Re: 72 volt motor help
Thanks for you r reply. It did seem like the motor manufacturers were worried about liability issues. I just figured since I use it as a show piece and bring it to sportsman shows they would like the exposure. So is ither a way to get a good estimate on speed? Do I need to hire a mad scientist to complete some massive formula. I don't mind trying a 48 volt torque motor but I'll be disappointed with anything less than 40 mph. I'm not looking to set any records but I would like to impress anyone watching when I stomp on the throttle. Tell me a little about you twin motor cart I'm intrigued and confused. Two motors, one cart?

Re: 72 volt motor help
My red Club Car (avatar pic) will do 40mph, but thats at or beyond 8,000 rpm which is bad news for the motor from what I am told, I keep the 40mph stuff to real short burst and cruise at 30-35 when I want to.

Re: 72 volt motor help
Fozzy, if it's really just a show piece and a few fun runs, a stock 36 volt motor would get you at or near 40 mph on 72 volts. Especially with the 8:1 gears you have. It might not last long but if it's not going to see much use it would work.
