Rewiring motor question
Ive been reading up on rewiring motors and one thing that is said over and over is that you can either wire for more speed or torque but not both. Aftermarket vendors like Plum Quick advertise that after a rebuild you will get both more speed and torque. What are they doing to a motor to accomplish this?

Re: Rewiring motor question
Over stock you can have both to some degree... Builders like Plun Quick when asked can also custom build a motor that has more bias in one direction over the other. what specifically I do not know except to say a lot more copper and iron go into one their motors than stock ones. My PQE motor is a beast compared to the stock motor and with a big controller it has a lot more speed and plenty of torque as I live in a very hilly location...

Re: Rewiring motor question
First, I am not a motor guy. I've learned more than I ever intended to know about what and how these motors make power. As much as we have experimented with motors over the past few years of drag racing I've determined there is just as much art as there is science in these motors.
There are plenty of variables in these motors. How many wraps of wire and wire size in the field coils affects torque and rpm as well as the air gap between the coils and the armature, whether the fields are in series or parallel etc.. Past that the number of armature divisions and length of the armature also affect both torque and rpm and on and on. Brush timing is a whole other factor in all of this. This is why I have a guy that builds motors for me vs me trying to do something myself. Then there is the whole other conversation of how to get them to live on 190 volts and 2000 amps. |
