Cheapest way to get into the 72v club :-)
I will be looking for a new set of batteries in the coming months and may as well buy six 12 volts instead of six 8 volts.
Obviously the controller will need to be swapped... but will the OEM 48v motor live long at 72v ? Just give me a parts list to start pecking away at. I can probably sneak a 'grand worth of stuff under the wifes radar if I spread it out over a few months. This is how my gun collection grows. |

Throw in a 72 volt Alltrax and good HD contactor and of coarse you'll need a way to charge 72 volts worth of batterys. Personally I like and use the czonka relays (EV200 series) on anything more than 48 volts. (500+A carry, 2000A interrupt at 320VDC) Coil voltage 9-36 volts so you'd have to separate the activation circuit from 72 volts. You can get higher voltage coils they are just not as common. p# ev200adana 32-95vdc coil. |

Re: Cheapest way to get into the 72v club :-)
Is there a 12v GC battery with the same footprint as my GC8's ?
I really was hoping to not have to hack up the battery compartment. |

if there were, you probably wouldnt want it. even the t1275 is too big a compromise. these days the oems have either abandoned them or offer other better options.

Re: Cheapest way to get into the 72v club :-)
All great advice so far!
So your list will be: *New battery tray and hold downs *Batteries- 6 12 volt (cgtech is correct this is a compromise for sure) *All new wires *contactor *controller *charger * motor - depending on how you drive it The 12 volt cart batteries will limit range and torque. The continental 12 volt batteries I have don't like pushing more than 400 amps. They have a lot of voltage sag under load, but they were intended to run stock golf carts at less than 300 amps. The 9 8volt batteries in my 4x4 cart put out 800-900 amps with ease compared to the 12 volt batteries. |

Re: Cheapest way to get into the 72v club :-)
There is another way...completely different angle, and needs more expert than me to find out how to do it, charge etc. You could get some Chevy Volt batter sections, on Ebay they come in 12v, 24v, 48v, and 96v usually. You could mate a 24v to a 48v and get 72, and then double that for more range. They ate small and light. My 48v section is about the size of a large 12 volt car battery. I am building a 48v ( for now) buggy with these batteries, just starting out, they require very specific Charging and Battery Management Systems...so I probably failed on your "Cheapest" track.
