64 volts on a bad boy?
Now I know it has been stated that high torque motors are the way to go with higher voltage, but how many rpms can you get away with on a high speed motor? Would 64 volts be too much? I have calculated that a D-380 would spin 7600rpm @ 64 volts, but would that burn it up or blow it to pieces?

Re: 64 volts on a bad boy?
D-380 motors are good 8000 RPM from PQ because they test them. It should be OK on a stock motor as well to 8000 RPM but be careful. If you go down a hill your 64V could over-speed the motor, 64V is right on the edge. User must be aware of what is going on.
I ran 120V on a PQ D-380 with out issue but watched the RPMs closely... except for that one time I was racing a car |

Re: 64 volts on a bad boy?
OK, since 00ClubDs is asking about the RPM of a D-380 this would not be OT.
I was racing my neighbors Nissan, nothing special but I did beat him. Since I was racing I didn’t watch my speed and realized my PQ D-380 was turning over 8800 RPM. It held together so I was impressed with the "test" and reported the results back to PQ. It was a test, that's my story and I am sticking to it! |

Re: 64 volts on a bad boy?
Thanks Nate and Calllen9, were you guys running stock rear gears? Also what kind of speeds were you both able to achieve @ 72V and 120V respectively? Finally how does Plum Quick modify the motors, do they just rebuild them with heavier/more reliable internal components and balance them? Sorry I know nothing about the electric DC motors, all I know is I'm getting tired of my 48v going just 25mph... looking for 35-40mph. Don't want something full-on racing because this cart is my transportation.

Re: 64 volts on a bad boy?
120V with 8:1 gears and 20" tires got 55 MPH and got there quickly. Not quick by calllen9's book but enough to scare the average golf cart enthusiast.
120V with 12.44:1 gears and 27" tires got 52 MPH with the front wheels off the ground at launch, another hair-raiser for the novice. Both carts were limited by motor RPM as I had more pedal on both but the motors were already up in R's. More gear would have definitely helped like maybe a 6:1 with 22" tires. Calllen9, I will be there but of no competition to you this year. The best I can pull off is helping with a friend in the 72V class. |
