Re: The Electric Go Cart!
Series controller on a SepEx motor... it can be done but you would need to monitor the field. Run the field current too high and burn up the field, run it too low and burn up the armature or controller.
The problem with this is... if you have to ask you may not be ready for such a project. I have to ask what your backup plan is if something burns up? If you are still willing to try then I will help as much as possible over a forum unless you live near Austin, Texas then I could show you. |

Re: The Electric Go Cart!
I immediately will recommend against using RESIDENTIAL wiring for a cart. That 1 awg stranded copper stuff at lowes is not going to be very easy to use to wire a cart, and will be very STIFF. Get 4ga or 2ga max (you definitely don't need 1awg) from a welding supply store, or a car audio dealer.
Metal for the frame should come from your local metal supply shop, tell them what you're building so they can help with the proper wall thickness, etc.. Get a good MIG or TIG welder to put it all together, if you don't weld, and don't own a good mig welder, forget the project... Or just find yourself a used go-kart chassis, and just set it up with all your electric parts, and you're all set. I have found dozens of really cheap ($40-80) kart frames, complete karts, etc. on craigslist, so just keep your eye out for something that will work for your project, with enough space to stuff all those batteries in. What about rear differential, etc.? Can't forget all those other important parts. Also, keyswitch, and BRAKES! |

And Nate if anything dose burn up ill probably just go out and buy the new right parts. I bought the speed controller and motor on ebay in one package for 280shipped I saw the deal and couldn't pass it up hopefully I'll have pics up today around noon and then you’ll get an idea of what I have! I also live in NY lol but I’m going to be in Dallas, TX on aug. 12 Also I haven’t fully posted what I have I'm just in the process of doing it and I have a very strong electrical background I’m a certified electronic tech so don’t be afraid to throw words at me that other people might not understand. |

Re: The Electric Go Cart!
Personally I would get a series motor for this set up. Your controller will work fine with it.
Also the 1ga stranded wire from Lowes is a very low strand household wiring and not very flexible. I would suggest a 4ga or 2ga welding cable. Here's an interesting go cart that sounds like what you are trying to do: |

Re: The Electric Go Cart!
Ya, I already know that video and I talked to the guy he sent me one reply about the gearing ratio and his ratio was the same of what I had in mind. Know the welding cable would be nice but i have no idea where to get it. Ill google around and see if I can find anything! And like I said I got to motor and controller on ebay for a nice price!

Re: The Electric Go Cart!
You got your motor and controller from eBay, they have 2ga welding cable too at about 50 cents a foot.
Search welding cable: Item # 190322636798 on eBay is 50' at $5 + $20 ship. |
