HELP! How do
I just got a a Ferroline used charger in today. The seller said it was a 36-volt charger for his old golfcart. I got it off ebay... but I opened it up and looked at the tag on the front and it reads like it's a 12volt charger.
Maybe I'm just freaking out? Here's how the tag reads... Model No. FL6 240P Serial No. 209717 CAPACITY 6 Cells 24 A.H. Lead Acid Battery In 8 Hrs A.C. INPUT Volts 115 Amp 9 D.C. OUTPUT Volts 12 amp 50 How can I test with a voltmeter to see if it really is a 36volt charger? I tried on my new 12volt car charger and if I put it at 12-volt trickle it reads less than 12volt... and if I put it on jump start I get 13.88 volts. So if this is a 36volt trickle charger how would I test to see if it actually puts out 36-volts? I'm not hardly getting a reading at all at the plug. PLEASE HELP!!!! |

Re: HELP! How do
Yeah it's what I'm a thinkin too. Plus I'm getting continuity between the + and - on the plug so I think it's got internal problems.

Re: HELP! How do
It's a 12v 50 amp charger. Not a real good choice for your batteries.....

Re: HELP! How do
Time to start talking to the guy.... Uggh. Ebay sucks anymore. I payed more for this hunk -a-junk than my new (roll around) car charger.

Re: HELP! How do
Put a voltmeter across the DC cables of the charger; let's see what it reads just for fun.

Re: HELP! How do
If they told you it was anything other than a 12v charger, methinks they were wrong.
Did a search and found that these battery chargers were installed on hydraulic 12v forklifts in the late 70's. Here's a delivery slip with the charger model number (RH Corner) that indicates it is a 12v charger. Click on thumb to enlarge |

Re: HELP! How do
HEY... Thanks!! That helps a bunch! I'm also taking it to my electrician so he can check it out. I talked to one of our electrical maintence guys at work and he said it would be possible to put a different transformer in it to make it 36volts instead of 12. But I'm betting that its just a 12volt. Meanwhile I'm still researching and looking for another charger. I found a "clarke" The guy said it is fully automatis. It doesn't have a timer on the front or anything. Is that possible with a micro-processor charger?

Re: HELP! How do
Micro processor chargers do not have timers.
Also trying to find a 36v transformer for that old relic is too costly for what you would end up with. I had a conversation with the tech guys at Lester when I wanted to change my charger from 42v to 48v, the transformer and ancillary parts costs were prohibitive and they told me just buy another charger. I don't know what you paid for your charger but you can buy a brand new one from LVS for $240 that will do both 36v and 48v golf cart battery packs. |

Re: HELP! How do
"Clarke" reminds me of forklift chargers. It wouldn't be very wise to use a forklift charger because of the high amp output. You think high amp will charge them fast but they will just burn a lead acid cart battery up. You'll be money ahead just to buy a new charger.
