Default Need help with motor selection

I am going to be doing a 36 to 48 volt conversion on a 1991 V-Glide club Car. I will be using the Curtis PB-6, Alltrax AXE 4855 500 amp controller, HD F/R switch, HD Albright solenoid, and 2 gauge welding cable.

NOW............Motor selection? I want good top speed (at least 20 mph) but monster torque for hilly terrain (I am sick of crawling up hills, I want to motor up them!!!!!). I know there are 3 big motor places that do great work (D&D, Plum Quick, and Electric Motor Products). Can I please get some suggestions from people about what they have used or are using and your results. There are so many selections. I know I can call any of the motor companies but I like to get other gearheads opinions too.

THANKS EVERYONE!!! THIS IS A GREAT FORUM!!!!

I am considering the ES-81 type motor from D&D motor systems. I tried calling today but they were already closed. This motor is supposed to give 70% more torque and 19 mph on 36 volts with the Alltrax AXE 650 amp controller. I am going to run 48 volts so I would assume more torque and speed too.

Has anyone used this motor in a build? Does this seem a wise choice?

I would love to hear opinions on this. Please post your combination of motor and controller. I really would like to hear from everyone to help me make the best choice. I really only want to do this once.

Sounds like a great combo....of coarse you do realize that you will never be finished. That seems like a torque motor but with the extra voltage you'll gain 20-25% in speed.

D&D list the ES-81 type motor as a Speed and Torque motor. I guess it gives a boost to both.

You might have all the torque and speed you need just with the 48v upgrade on your stock motor. Why don't you try that out first and if you need more get a new motor,

Thanks guys!!! I will probably do the 48 volt upgrade first as you say, but according to Alltrax the 650 amp controller will probably fry the stock motor so I was going to a high peformance D&D replacement.

redriderno22:
Also I did not see the ES-58 listed on the D&D site. Where did you buy your ES-58 from? Do you know the part number?

You can't go wrong with D&D. If you are set on a new motor then call D&D and ask for Vic. He is the go-to guy up there. You tell him what you are building and what you want it to do and he will take care of you. I have dealt with at least 3-4 of the other motor mfg. guys like EMP, and they have good motors too. Vic is the only one that if he feels like he can't set you up with a reliable motor that you will be happy with, then he will tell you so. He won't B.S. you into something just to make a sale. He is a real stand-up guy and D&D is a great motor mfg. company.

And no I don't work for them.....
When I started to build my drag cart I called him and told him what I wanted to do......and he has been a big help.
Also, I have been running a Alltrax 600dcx on my sons EZGO for over a year, Stock Motor, 22" tall tires....WE BEAT THE SNOT OUT OF IT!!
It has worked great. Give that stock motor a try....

Forgot to mention....cart is 48v now...also runs about 25-26mph.....I have the ramp set up to 13. It will climb a 50-55 degree incline spinning the whole way!
Tons of torque and speed too....with a stock motor!
