Default What is the best elec. meter?

So I hoping to still get my electric cart from GB sometime this year. . . . And I have a simple meter/tester.

Anyone buy a tester that found that had all the right setting for use with a cart. I.E. what range of a tester do I need? Are the kind that you can change out between pin and clips nice to have?

Just seeing how expensive I need to go.

Thanks for any advice.

I may make myself look stupid here, it won't be the first time. I'm assuming you are talking of a digital multimeter. I don't know how technical you want to get but a standard VOM would probably be good. I use a $40.00 model and crimped alligator clips on it so they are removable. That's very convenient, I clip the neg and test hot wires one handed with the pin. What you have will probably work unless you want to justify a new meter to the wife. Then you will definitely need the $600.00 dollar model.

Unless you want to measure high amp loads, a $40 Craftsman Digital Multimeter is just fine.

I don't own an amprobe any more. I lost it about 20 years ago. (the probe!)

I think you will have all you need in a meter in any $40 - $50 meter... a few 3 ft wires with alligator clips and I'm set up I use a Sperry from Lowes.... Of course you can spend $200 on a fluke? But it don't work any better for me

Thanks for the info guys.

I have one from lowes ( it is green), but it only has probes, no clips.

So I am looking to upgrade, and just seeing how crazy I needed to go

Work is going to buy it for me, but my dad will flip if I come back holding a $600.00 meter.

My toolbox has a number of small gauge jumpers with insulated alligator clips on each end. Clip one end to the circuit, the other end to the multimeter probe. Best of both worlds.

Diddo
My favorite clip has a larger battery post type clip on one end and a small gator clip on the other. It's about 3 ft long. I can seach anywhere on a stock cart from the battery bay to the tail lights that way....

OK OK. you talked me into it.

I just didn't know if that method would skew my numbers to much to get a good reading.

so I need 1 long and two short or go ahead and make 2 longs.

what gauge do the jumpers need to be?

12ga work?

I have a Fluke in the bench. I have 2 tool boxes, 2 boats and 1 cart, all have a Harbor Freight meter in them and they work as well as the Fluke, just not the quality. Best you can buy for 5 bucks.
