speed
I do automotive restoration, (65-70 Fastback mustangs) alot of custom fab work, paint and mechanics on gas and diesel vehicles so Im pretty well rounded. I just got into the golf carts. I started with gas and now messing with some electric carts. In reading some of the posts on here I see where people are getting 60 MPH+ out of their carts. HOW IN THE WORLD ARE THEY DOING IT? I had toyed with the idea of stroking the 18 horse gas motor on my jacked up, stretched out mule 550 and porting the head but even with that theres no way im going to get that kinda speed out of it. Regearing will take away the torque so I dont get it.... and ya'll are doing it on electric carts!

Re: speed
Simple explanation is overvolting the DC motor to make it spin faster. Throw in high speed gears and high current controllers, $$$ is all it takes.

Re: speed
Oh I understand now... if I go out in my shop and just throw money at it, it will go goes faster.... or do I have to stick them on it somehow? When people ask me at my shop "how do you do this or that", I give them enough to get started or at least something to think about. When I posted this I figured I would get a few ideas on how its being done... not to break into your "action", Just for my own personal use. But hey... Im lifting them and gearing them and other things now and just got a 97 EZGO electric. That looks like a good place to start.

I don't think Gorno or GCF was being smart with you with their replies,it is the same with golf carts, as nascar, dragsters, or anything with a motor on it; money buys speed. There are many people on this forum who can help you with hi-speed motors, cables, controllers, etc. In South Carolina our saying is "You can't outrun the dollar bill!" Hope this might help you in the future. Happy New Year to all!

60 mph electric cart is a $3000 upgrade, 70 mph costs $5000. How fast you wanna go?

Re: speed
upgrade to #4 or #2 wires though out the power system, 600-700 amp controller, high speed motor, ( you stock motor is probably 2000-2500 rpm) you can get them in the 5000 rpm range, larger tires = higher speed by changing the effective gear ratio, also high speed gears can be had for the rear end.

Re: speed
There is a local cart place around here that says he has a high speed motor (dont know the RPM) for my EZGO for $200. Is that a bad price and is there anything I need to look out for? He said he has been through it but I dont know him.
If I get it, and I think I will, I have old welding lead around the shop to make my cables out of. Since Im going to need new Batterys anyway Im thinking about the 48 volt conversion. |

Re: speed
If you switch to 48 volt, you have to change everything at once.
You can change the motor and cables, now and other things later if needed. I would be careful of the $200 motor, unless you know what it is. Like was mentioned, an AC motor conversion is an awesome upgrade, but a little expensive. But then expensive is a relative term. |
