12v battery discussion
I would like to open a 12 volt battery discussion here.
With 6s and 8s costing $100+ each -it makes sense to go with more volts. And maybe for less? 1. But, what about amps? It's always about amps with DC, right? Nate? 2. What type, group, and brand is best suited for the task. 3. Are deep cycle marines all they are made to be? 4. What about 24v forklift? What about weight to amp/volt ratios? 5. What about costs? 6. Is anybody following me here? |

Re: 12v battery discussion
I guess the answer to #6 is getting pretty obvious......

Re: 12v battery discussion
No, hey, that's okay. This info is all over the site. It's just spread out. I just read some....mostly I was wondering what 12v batteries the 72v projects were using? I'll do some more research

Re: 12v battery discussion
I have search for a lot of 12v GC batteries. Prices have been $150 plus. I also checked out some Floor Scrubber batteries that had really nice specs but they were large and expensive. If you come up with a source let us know.

Re: 12v battery discussion
I"m checking a source over in Phoenix area now. As usaual the hard part is to compare apples to apples - There are 50 ways to skew an amp rating! They have some sealed GC batteries that fit the footprint and can be shipped cause they're sealed. More later....

Re: 12v battery discussion
The reason I didn't reply is I'm not a fan of electric cars. And if you talk to 5 different battery guy's and you'll get 5 different awnsers. The "things" I do know. Can a 12 volt battery (in it's "case size" hold more lead than a 8 volt battery) ? No. Can a 8 volt hold more lead than a 6 volt ? No. I have so many " "RV" owners "junk ther 2-12 volts and use 2-6 volts (or build a box for 4-6 volts) becuase with more lead plates...the more "discharge time"/"they do the job longer on a charge". I beleive, and I'm no expert, but there are 3 types of batteries. #1-lead acid/wet cell-"we all use now in our cars". #2-(on the other end.....Gell cell). Very expensive (2 to 3 times more), and you must have "just the right charger" and no "proof" they do the job better or last aslong as "wet cell" and have seen they do not last at all ! (they dont leak and no maintanance, but at what cost ?). #3- Inbetween are now (I believe there called an "AGM" (don't quote me on this!), they are a "sealed battery, no maintanance. In my understanding...The have the "good part of "wet cell" and the no maintanance of "gell cell". Once again, you must have just the "right charger" and they are 2 times more expensive than wet cells. There is "no" proof to me they will work any better than "wet cell" and/or "gell cell batteries". This may be off your post question, but when I was young....I "KNEW" we would be "flying around in cars" That didn't seem to work out ! I do beleive.... If they could come up with a "fuel cell"....Electric's would be the way to go ! Instant "HP",snap your neck power and no emmissions. These are "My" thoughts. Hope it awnsered some questions and made you think. Later Dave

Re: 12v battery discussion
It is the AGM that I am looking at. It might be the one to use for the extreeme DC carts where Volts are as important as amps. If a suitable 200amp 12v could be found, working on the principle that the higher voltage motor runs more efficiently than the lower voltage, a loss of reserves may not be as critical as it looks at first glance. Consider if you take a 36v motor and turn it 2xs as fast w/ 72v you will cut your run time in half over the same distance.
I know some of the guys here have put these theories to the asphalt and I would like to hear what they have to say about the 12v batteries they have used. Thanks for your input |

Re: 12v battery discussion
I started useing AGM batteries in my Harleys and have found them to last about twice as long as a standard lead acid battery, and in my case they are about half again as much.

Re: 12v battery discussion
Harley? GC or Fatboy?
There are some good looking 135 AH 12v but the price is as much as $250. Some 200AH 6v also. These are wet lead sealed. Looks like they are made in Phoenix? I've got a product description and price list for AGM GC batteries. |
