Speed vs. Torque

Can you gain speed and torque? Yes
Can you get speed out of a torque motor? Yes
Can you get torque out of a speed motor? Yes

Short answer.

How do I get speed out of a torque motor? Raise the voltage.
How do I get torque out of a speed motor? Raise the amps.

In both cases you are raising the input watts so the output horsepower also goes up.

Note: It is not advisable to draw more than 700 amps from 6-volt golf cart batteries, more amperage can damage them.

What would you call the 36v motor in my 1986 club car?
Speed or torque? Since I'm going to be putting 48v through it anyway, is more amperage with a higher amp controller the way to go? That is until I can do a motor upgrade.

There are quite a few guys on here now that are running 48v and I for one would like to know which motor would be the best of both worlds. Now, having said that, I like torque for my off road driving. I can only see going so fast in a cart !?!

What about the 36v verses 48v motors for these mildly amped up carts?

A 36 volt motor on 48 volts will increase both speed and torque over the same motor on 36 volts. Since a stock 48 volt cart was designed to run with a stock 36 volt cart your 36 volt motor on 48 volts would beat them as well in speed and hill climbing.

See you got both! So what is your trade off? It will take a little longer to fully charge the batteries.

Just to reiterate. If I was going to buy a performance motor for this 48v series type cart, I should be looking at 36v, medium hp, low rpm motors? Say maybe a 5 to 8hp. 2800 rpm ? Am I getting it yet?

What kind of riding do you do?
Are you going to go above 48V?

When you get into performance motors they do not have one for 36V and another for 48V. They use the same motor with two voltage ratings.

Off road and on road. But it is more important to have it pull itself out of the sand or mud with two grown men in it, than it is to go 30mph down the road..More voltage is a possibility, but for ease of charging and weight , I would like to stay at 48v if I can accomplish the goals stated above. Thank you.

I would tend to go with a torque motor, maybe not as torque oriented as a D-395 (Beast) but I would error on the side of torque rather than speed. A D-380 (Bad Boy) could have enough torque to pull a cart out of the mud or sand with two men in it but it will take quite a bit of amperage to do so.
