Freeing up motor?
I'll run this past you guys and you tell tell me if I'm on crack or not.
Anyway a few years ago I was talking to a man that was in the hot rodding of golf carts. He told me that we could take a contact (solenoid etc) and some 10 gage solid wire and connect the two electrical contacts on the motor together. When the motor reached full speed you could engage the contact and it would free up some electrons fighting inside of the motor and actually give you more RPM. Would this / can this work? Or was it smoke up my butt? |

Re: Freeing up motor?
This is a trick for series motors only will not work on PM motors. He is referring to a field shunt, when you shunt the field you reduce the "CEMF" Counter Electro-Motive Force and the motor can spin faster. Although this seems like a cheap speed fix it is that CEMF that is controlling your motor amps. When it is reduce as in a field shunt the amps can go unchecked and run very high. The 10-gauge wire is supposed to act as a resistor and try to reduce run-away amps. This will still tax the entire electrical system, run the batteries down quite fast and is generally not recommended.
