Heavy Duty SPDT Solenoid for 36v-72v boost
I'm looking for a heavy duty SPDT solenoid to use for my boost mode...
I've got a 89 resistor cart... My thought is having the 'common' lead of a heavy duty solenoid attach at the motor and then have the NC contact connect to the output from the resistor pack. The NO contact would connect directly to the output side of my boost pack which is wired to the end of the normal pack in series. when you hit the boost switch ( either button on the steering wheel, or more likely micro switch at the extreme end of the accelerator pedal travel ) the solenoid swaps over to the the higher voltage (60 or 72 volts depending on how many batteries I install) this way, the resistor pack, FNR switch and everything else is out of the circuit when you hit boost and you don't have to worry about back feeding or anything else. I'm assuming I'd still probably want to put the 100uf caps in on the boost solenoid to prevent arcing of the solenoid itself? Are the caps that you guys are bridging the terminals with polarity sensitive? If so, what direction do you put the - or + terminals? Any comments on if this would or would not work? Thanks! -J |

If you do this you have no control of the speed. Once the contact is on it's wide open. Whatever voltage you have is what you run.

that's exactly what I want... I'm fine with no control of speed once you hit the boost mode.

I have 2 thoughts... one is a second standard solenoid on the - side of the cart, the other is using a high-amperage coupler (like you use to attach a snowplow to the front of your truck) and loop the connector back on itself... then mount the socket for it next to the charging outlet... if it runs away, you pull the connector out which breaks the + power going into the motor.

My boost circuit if the solenoid fuses closed all I have to do is let go of the boost button. It will blow the 300amp fuse and revert to normal resistor cart 36v operation.
