Default Upgrading my controller,,which one??

In the process of upgrading to 48 volts and my controller. Which of these controllers do you guys use,and how high of amps can I go without changing my motor? I was looking at GE,ALLTRAX,CURTIS.

I use Alltrax, but GE are good too.
Alltrax had some problems in the beginning with their software and they were having many controllers to fail but they are really popular and work really nice now, I like them.
DC Curtis I don't like for upgrading. Only AC curtis looks nice, until we start to see other manufacturers affordable AC controllers (and more options in AC motors)

Your cart looks like a Medalist, series motor.
I would change the motor also if you want a really good upgrade, but that motor can handle well the 48v. Also you can contact ww.empinc.biz for re-doing your motor for a two speed motor, you would love that.

Alltrax top amp for that motor is 650amp but you will want to limit the amperage to 500 or 450 in order to keep stock motor safe (in case you want to use stock motor) In other words, just buy a controller this big if you're planning to upgrade the motor also in future. Other wise a 400amp option with stock motor is the maximum recommend and will work good.

GE top amp is 700, but again, you'll need a motor capable of handle that much amperage.

There's many other controllers out there on the market. Logisystem controllers are probably affordable but they only work with 0-5k potentiometer and your medalist has an ITS throttle.

Very important: USE a heavy duty solenoid 48v. Alltrax recommends white rodgers and Albright, but I would say Albright sw200 is the way to go or a sealed solenoid (kilovac-czonka) with any 400amp or up speed controller... in case you want to change motor in future, you need a good solenoid from the beginning.

Also do not forget to upgrade the buss bars on direction switch for thicker ones and check the condition of contacts. This is a weak point when upgrading to higher perfomance (voltage/amperage).

Keep us updated on this thread.

Good site remibeau.
I have heard about those upgrades on original controllers. Anyone besides remibeau who can tell about the reliability of this controller transformation?
It's a nice cheap option for upgrading vehicles without going for mayor changes... Anyway I'm still worried on heat issues since Curtis controllers tends to heat up really fast, even when they change the aluminum for a thicker one (allowing more heat dissipation).
Good site remibeau.
Anyway, z71georgiaman you still need a higher performance solenoid, wires and buss bar upgrade, keep that in mind.

This site list a 550amp upgrade for the Curtis 1204 in which is on my cart now.Is this too high of amp to use with the stock motor? I'm not wanting to change the motor at this time.

550 It is too much amperage, but the motor can handle it for short periods. Go ahead for that one, it is a good option but be careful not to ask too much for the motor.
But why don't the 450amp? it is cheaper and you probably have enough for what you need.

You have also another option of use the 450amp with 48v on stock motor which will give you hell of performance for what you want.

One way or another, you need to do the buss bar upgrade and solenoid. For the 48v, you will need 2 extra batts and at least a 12v charger which adds more money to your project.

There is no way to get performance for "cheapo"

Let us know!

The stock motor can't "Use" much more than 400 amps or so. Anything more and its a waist. You could possibly overload the motor in extreme conditions and burn it up. (I have personally never seen it happen, just something I heard.) If it were me I would still get the biggest controller I could afford just in case you ever decide to get a better motor in the future.

That's exactly what I meant with my posts.
I told z71georgiaman on the first place not go over 400amp, but it seems he does not get it, so I guess, he needs to play with fire to really know what fire is.

Be careful then with the 550amp controller if you decide to do that one so.

For the sake of discussion...I think the georgiaman was unclear on whether having a controller with a larger capacity than his motor would 'handle' was a danger to the motor? I think there is some confusion on this issue.
