Default Question about programmable controllers

Im wanting to upgrade to a 48v system but seen that some controllers are programmable from 24-48v's. Does this mean I could get one of these controllers try the new controller at 36v and if it improves performance enough for me I can keep it at 36v and if not go ahead with the upgrade to 48v and reprogram the controller to 48v?

The controller does not have to be programmable ~ Just rated for 36-48 and it operate on either voltage.

Great so if I get a alltrax dcx 400 dcs controller and want to upgrade later it will be fine? Also when I upgrade to this controller and keep the 36v system I know I need to upgrade cables as well do I need to upgrade anything else? Solenoid etc?

Yes anytime you increase controller size you are raising the amperage that will potentially flow from the battery pack to the motor... everything that amperage flows through needs to be upgraded so it can handle the amps or you will have resistance and this will create heat. Lots of heat. Enough to burn a cart up in some cases. So yes, the solenoid and cables need to be upgraded.

My opinion on this...I know everyone got one!

I have installed a couple of the Alltrax controllers in my day and if they are the 24 volts to 48 volts they don't run the cart well @36 volts or less. They like 48 fine but the ones I have done were a slow go on anything less than 48.

All carts are slow at 36v compared to 48v assuming all else equal.. 48v carts are slow compared to 72v carts....... Man I got raise the cart I have now to 72v. Miss it bad.

Question Re: Question about programmable controllers

I mean they are a dog on anything other than 48 volts. I have to redo two carts because the customer wasn't happy with the way it ran on 36. He wasn't happy about buying 2 more batteries. Thankfully both times I had just bought batteries for both so we swapped them out for 8 volts.

do all programmable alltrax controllers have to be initially programmed? Im looking at pairing the 24v-48v 650 amp alltrax controller with the D@D 170-004-0002A 48v series motor(aka GE 395)

Only if the settings that it is calibrated to does not fit your needs!
Example: If in your application you need the throttle input to be 5K-0 ohms instead of 0-5K ohms because your throttle pot rests on 5Kohms and goes to 0 ohms at wide open, then you would have to program it to the correct setting.
Or if you want to get fancy and set a smooth current ramping regardless how you floor it or current limiting,or high pedal lockout (will not arm if someone is standing on the go pedal) etc.

My AXE 7245 came perfect for my cart and I would not change a thing so thankfully I never had to program anything. However the options are there if needed.
