Default Boost or permenant 72v

After reading many post, I am glad I didn't go home and wire in a few more batteries, upgrade the relay and f/r and hit the road. It appears to upgrade to 72 volts the controller is necessary? I dont mind buying the controller, but my kids drive the cart occasionally. I've read the post related to switching from 48 to 72, but couldn't this be done with one f/r switch by adding a lead from battery 4(12v) to the f/r with a rated disconnect along with a lead to the f/r with another rated disconnect. Thus allowing you to use same f/r and restrict speed for younger drivers. I understand an upgraded f/r and czonka relay would be required. Of course you would have to use caution in switching. My question being would I have to upgrade controller to run 72 volts. Would I be better off just using the "boost" method? thanks in advance

Kids are sharp. It won't take long for them to see you switching something under the seat for more speed....

You can lock out the boost with a key switch. You can't run a 48 volt electronic speed control system and then switch it to 72 volts on the fly....just not gonna happen. It will send the controller into error mode. You have to stop, kill the power to controller, switch to 72 volts, then re-apply power....If your ok with doing that then it is possible to configure the system to use a 48/72 volt pack with a switch or solenoid to switch the extra batteries in series with the 48 volts. Its actually easier than you think.\

Somethin glike this...

Kiddos are on 48 volts
Kidos get off (which kills power to controller)
You get on and insert your key and engage the solenoid which puts the extra power into series with the 48 volts
Cart is now running in 72 volt mode.

Only problem I see is this....with an alltrax AXE type controller I believe you have to set up what battery voltage you are using when programming. Supposedly it will use more power if its set to run 48 volts and you actually use 72. (just something I heard, not sure if its true) This all sounds good on paper but real world might be different.

So to run 72v I would have to upgrade the controller correct? I am thinking about doing the "boost" method in your post Roady, bypassing the controller.
I could key switch this to keep the boy out. I was mainly wondering if I needed to upgrade the controller to handle the 72 volts in full time mode. I have a steering wheel with a nitrous button that I might just make a boost type setup, bypassing the controller. thanks

I have looked at using a 72 volt boost myself before I went with the 72 full voltage. The only thing Nate and I were worried about was the speed of the cart when in boost mod there is no control it's wide open or stoped, no in between. Very unsafe when you start to think about it. The alltrax controller I have is good on 48 or 72 doesn't matter which voltage you use.

Will a stock 97 club car controller handle a 72 volt system if I upgrade my solenoid and f/r switch? thanks

Thanks Roady I that is what I thought. What is the best controller that you would recommend for a club car with 7.5 medium travel lift to go 72v, do plan on sending my motor to have the torque/speed switch. awesome site by the way

You can't go wrong with an Alltrax AXE 7245...might even consider a 72 volt Logisystems Controller. Logisystem's website seems to have fallen off the map so I'm not sure if you can get one.
