96 volt golf cart rearend

Hi guys im new here but figured you guys are the ones to ask about this.. I;m building a ev and hoping to use some type of golf cart rearend engine set up to power it with 96 volts,,will any golf cart rearend handle this?? speeds of up to 65 miles per hour??anyone know where i can get a motor that will bolt to a golf cart rearend that will handle the 96 volts also?? the vehicle will weigh around 1000 lbs..and i want it to get near highway speeds thus using the 96 volts.. ive seen some packages for evs selling that would work great but not sure how the motors will bolt into the cart rearend.. and if any cart rearend would hold up to theses speeds..any help any of you could give would be greatly appreciated.. i really dont want to use a car rearend or volks wagon transaxel etc.. id like all parts to be new and if i can get any golf cart rearend to work would be great! im looking at buying the motor and controller and everything new.. so no trying to convert anything i dont have to except the rearend , thanks for your help

Welcome. There are members here who have gone as high as 160 volts to a golf cart motor. But, do you really think it is safe to run at highway speeds in a plastic box?

kewl! appreciate your input please dont worry bout my safety. it will be safe i promise! lol just help me figure out how to power this **** thing..lol can you take a regular motor and rework it for the higher voltage or do they sell motors for these golf cart rearends for 96 volts?? also will the rearend on the golf cart hold together at these speeds?? know anyone you could direct me too for these answers?? thanks for your help!

well scottyb, without giving the whole idea away its a vehicle that will carry two peeps and run on 96volts weigh in at 1000 lbs carry an onboard gas powered generator, also sporting a 55 watt solar panel..and im looking at even messing with browns gas to supplement the fuel for the generator.. the ultimate goal is a 200 mile per gallon vehicle, and if you guys can help me figure out the electric engine and rearend for it im on my way lol ive been doing research on small electric cars and 96 volt seams to be the minimum for anything with power and lasting ability between charges..also been looking at the 'dry cell' batteries optima makes anyone have any expericence with these?? say they charge twice as fast and last twice as long.. and are twice as expensive unfortunately lol... so thats it ina nutshell..with 4.00 gas and rising i think this would be a fun project:-)

First off Welcome to BGW,

I always like guys like you....new guys = new ideas. Now for the quesion about rear end...I have an older melex axle with the motor perpendicular to the axle...its the best axle I can see being used for something like that. It looks like a mini 9" for rear end.

If your useing the gas engine to run the motor your gonna need lots of amps....but at cruise speed the amp draw on a motor like a beast motor is minimal. I'm wanting to think something like 20-30 amps...obviously this is for 48 volts but with 96 volts that amp draw number will go down considerably. You could continuously charge the batts with the generator...preferably a semi conductor based charger instead of a transformer based charger.

How are you going to configure the 55 watt to charge? Charge controller?

the 55watt solar panel is a 12 volt battery charger..its 2ft by 3ft..planning on using it on the roof of the vehicle..no the generator is only used to charge the batteries not directly running the engine.. its a 3500 watt generator..between the solar charger and the generator and the dry cell batteries.. maybe some browns gas for the generator the question is how far will she go??lol from what ive been reading the 96 volts should be able to power the vehicle up to 65 mph with no problem.. and get about 5 hrs on a charge.. after amps drop and the generator kicks in to supplement it.. and the solar panel does its job too.. lol.. well you get the idea... now can i do this with a golf cart rearend??most evs ar saying using a 10 to one gear ratio which most of the carts seam to have.. after looking at a couple of you guys signatures i can see some of you have already powered your carts up to and past 96 volts..kewl.. now the question is how fast can these reaerends go??lol and will they blow apart at these speeds?? thanks for any help you can give man

the melex axel rearend you have sounds kewl roady89, i guess what im wondering is any ready available rearends you can still buy new able to handle this type of abuse??lol I know golf carts arent desighned to go 65 miles per hour.. just curious if anyone has had any expereince with any high speed problems.. such as bearings comming apart..gears not handeling it etc.. also how are you guys getting these 96volt motors plus connected to your axels?? are they stock motors that have been reworked?? or what?? it would be great just to be able to bolt a 96 volt motor to a stock rearend and put the juice to it.. thanks for any help:-)
