Nice project. If you add more voltage you might want to mount batteries in rear to keep front end weight down so you don't need power steering.
Are you actually using the tranny and shifting gears or leaving it in high?

I'm ready to go higher voltage!! I'm looking for advice on whether it would be better to modify and upgrade this system to higher voltage or start from scratch with an EV motor like the D&D ES 31-B? I like the fact that modifying the golf cart system but keeping the motor would require less fabricating and time since most of the work is done. I was thinking buy a good 96-120 volt controller and first try the motor and see how it does. I have 12 new 8 volt batteries(considering 3 more for 120 volts) and there's plenty of room to put them in the back. The reason I chose to use 8 volt batteries is from what I understand the more lead is better for longer range. It sure is a lot of weight though.

What do you guys recommend for high voltage controllers? How does this Kelly look?

Thanks!!

The larger 6v and 8 volt batteries have much more lead in them than nearly any 12v. It takes lead to make amps and amps is what the motors run on - not volts.... So there are trade offs.

I'm so impressed!!! Thank you for your post and all of the pic's of the build! I agree in Scottyb's battery logic. I'm not a fan of the new 4-12 volt cars. When you look at "download test times" these 4 -12's are 85 minutes, 6 -8's are 105 minutes. That would really increase your running time. I would think "dropping" the one 12 volt (for accesories) and useing a voltage reducer would give one more battery space. I'm no engineer and not an expert on electric cars or electronics, but I've read that a 36 volt motor can handle 48 volts, why can't a 48 volt motor handle 72 volts or more (with the right controller)? One thing you didn't mention in your posts (or maybe I missed them) what style and fabrication did you use for the potentiometer/accelerator ? Being your car is a wagon, would one of those "CVX's- is that right?" be lighter ? I will be watching the thread for shure! Thanks Dave

Thanks for the comments!!

I originally planned on a 96 volt system, then 120, but now I'm thinking why not spend a little more $$ and it can be 144 volts?

Here's my shopping list so far. Does it sound complete for getting the car going?

D&D ES 31-b motor
http://www.evparts.com/prod-MT2130.htm

Kelly 144 volt controller
http://www.kellycontroller.com/shop/...product_id=150

Charger
http://www.kellycontroller.com/shop/...product_id=272

Kelly assembly board
http://www.kellycontroller.com/shop/...product_id=258

Pot box
2/0 cable
18 batteries
Lot of sweat and swearing

I'm interested in any advice or opinions from the electric experts.
I haven't heard any bad things about Kelly controllers and I really do like the price compared to other ones out there. Is 500 amps pretty good fom my setup? I was also looking into the LogiSystems controllers.
