Default 2 AWG Battery Cable Saga

I wanting to upgrade my cables to a 2 AWG cable set for upgrades that are coming (controller and high torque motor). I see that I have 3 options. Buy from carts unlimited or maxilink, or build my own. It will be more cost effective for me to build my own since my friend is an electrician and is going to supply me with some cable if I want it and if he still has it at his shop. I will be purchasing a new f&r switch from carts unlimited since mine is fried and want the cables to go with it while I'm making this upgrade. Can anyone give me their opinion on buy some vs. make some, and maxilink vs. carts unlimited cables? Thanks in advance.

If you decide to build your own don't forget to factor in the costs of the lugs, solder and shrink tubing.
I found lugs cheap on the net but I didn't feel like waiting so I went down the street to west marine and bought a pack of 25 or 30 tinned copper lugs for approx 75 bucks for 0 gauge cable. Shrink tube is not cheap either.

Thanks Imswest,

Do you remember how much cable it took to do yours length wise? Did you crimp or solder? How happy are you with the turn out (quality and performance change)? Any corrosion problems? Thanks again.

The Saga may be over! I just pulled the trigger on a new HD F&R switch and a set of 2 AWG cables for the cart. I thought about making a set, but I think for the first build I will leave it to Scottyb. I think he may know what he's doing. Lets just hope and pray I can follow directions and not fry a cart or myself.

Yes, I've made a few sets If you have any questions when you get the 2g cable set, the OBC stud kit, & the HD F&R just email or call.
Thank you for your order.

If your not well versed in soldering large cables its best to leave it to the pros. Only reason I didn't buy from Scott was I had 30 feet of 0 gauge from my car stereo days...and I'm a die hard DIY guy..
Don't worry about screwing up ,just disconnect your -&+ and then do one at a time and make sure to use two wrenches when unbolting the motor studs so you don't damage the stud.

Good advice right there, Spray those nuts and studs with rust buster while you wait

While were on topic , Scott , care to share any tricks on how not to melt the end of the insulation while getting large cable hot enough to suck the solder in?
I've tried a few tricks from wet towels to a pair of visegrip pliers as a heatsink..

Trade secrets ........
I can tell you you do need a lot of temperature control and timing... At that point you best have 3 things in 2 hands to be successful.
