I'm getting an electric cart from a buddy of mine for free and wanted to upgrade it to be able to drive in the sand dunes. I'm not looking to go over the top with it, but I would like to make it a reliable and useful cart.
I don't know the brand and model yet, I pick it up tomorrow night. I think it is a 36 volt yamaha though. I wanted to lift it, put some paddle tires on it and upgrade the motor. Any suggestions on a motor and controller that would do well in the sand? This would be my first cart build so any help would be appreciated. As soon as I get it, I will post model and pics. |

Someone more familiar with electric carts will be along soon I'm sure, but when it comes to the dunes, the most power you can afford whether gas or electric is what you want. That sand eats up power. Welcome to the forum

An electric cart running the sand dunes is not a wise choice. The sand will use more power and you will find yourself stuck. A gas cart is really the only way to go in the sand. There is no doubt it will run in the sand but a high amp draw will be more "constant" than normal terrain where once you get going the amp draw goes down.

Sounds like I'm gonna be building a nice electric cart to sell to fund the real project. Oh well...this should be fun.

Well, I'm getting the cart tonight or tomorrow. I'll post pics by the end of the weekend and I'll figure out where I want to go with it after that.

You would need an extreme torque motor and it would not be fast. Sand eats amps quite fast and I am afraid all your buddies would be long gone. If you wanted to save amps in the sand you would be looking at a 48V system with a Beast or Stealth Stalker, 15:1 gears and good sand tires. This set up would do around 10 to 12 MPH in the sand. I am guessing at your speed based on what I have seen a Bad Boy on 60V do in the sand. A lot of work and expense to go less than 15 MPH in my opinion.
I don’t even know if those motors are available for Yamaha. |
