Upgrading my controller

I have a Harley, 1967 three wheel cart with the old solenoid type controller on it. It works but is not a smooth power system. I would love to get a solid state controller for it. I may in the future try to upgrade things.

I'm not sure what I'm reading in the other tread named similarly. Is it possible to run a 36 volt motor with say, 48 volts? I've done it on small motors like the sprayer pump I use for thistles. It's 12 V and I run it on 18 V.
The main thing though is the controller. Can I do this conversion?

Motor will like 48 volts. You will need batteries, wiring, 48 volt solenoid, PB-6 or similar, controller, and a way to charge 48 volts.

Whoa, whoa! While I'm not a total idiot when it comes to electricity and electronics, I am a newbie to DC motor controllers. What is a PB=6? I know its a pot and probably runs off the foot feed to vary the voltage to the controller as a signal for it to increase or decrease the voltage to the drive motor. I think I was looking for more than a one sentence answer. Is there one out there?

Mrrwarmstrong, yes the PB-6 is a potentiometer in a box that tells the controller how much power to apply.

48 volts will be no problem on the motor
Mounting a controller will be easy as well
You will need one master solenoid, which will also be easy to mount.
Custom wiring won't be a hang up either just don’t get hung up on the factory configuration.
Mounting the throttle pot and having it calibrated to your pedal.... there's the big issue. It is not impossible but you do want full travel to equal full power. To short and the cart will feel jerky, too long and you won't reach full power.

As far as matching PB-6 with controller, some are 0-5k, others are 5k-0. Just be sure controller matches output of pot box. Some controllers are programmable to match almost any input to them.
You will like it when you get it completed, but its more money than cart is worth(market value), but lots of fun anyway.

Buckmanmike is correct, if you are doing this for resale don't bother with it. If you like the cart and want to learn then this is an excellent introduction to electric control.
I have done the same thing on my old cart, you know my 168V cart is not resistor control and you know 1979 was not electronic control.
Personally I choose 0-5k throttle pots.

Thanks guys, I'm not going to sell it. It was given to me and the grand-kids call it my Harley. Mostly want to get bigger wheels for it and maybe a 2-wheel front axle.

ou oh, if grand kids are involved you'll have the hottest cart around. LOL. My granddaughter loves riding on my cart. Its a special time we have together.
