Default battery explosions

I have a 16 ft electric boat requiring 8-6volt cart batteries. Currently, I am using Rayovac Ultra Pro. However, over the past year 3 of the 8 (at different times) have internally exploded, blowing the top off the battery. Has anyone else had this experience with Rayovac?

Tell us a little more about the boat. What kind of motor and controller does it have? How manny amps does it pull at cruising speed?

My first guess is they may be undersized for your application. Pulling to manny amps to fast can cause a boom.

Thumbs up Re: battery explosions

Low charge batteries trying to put out amps can cause the boom also. Bad maintenance on the batteries can cause them to blow, are a short in them.

Rayovac golf cart battery? Rayovac makes alkaline batteries. Did not know they made any FLA batteries.

I have only seen automobile batteries explode. Most were blown from an external spark or the plates were dry and exposed to air. I have blown 2 over the years while jumping cars on service calls.

These batts sat unused (low charge) for a while. Boss wanted me to try to "bring them back to life". I charged them up, went to drive them to the "wash-out" spot, didnt quite make it. All 6 went off at same time, due to battery fill system. I was sitting on top of them, it was easily loud as a shotgun.

I had a single battery blow a cap off about 2 weeks prior (first battery explosion for me in 8 years at cart shop), so i knew what the risk was, and what had just happened. I just got off the cart and walked away, i didnt want to be anywhere near that nasty cloud of smoke. Then immediate acid cleanup operation as soon as i verified it wasnt still on fire. It was on a $24k Garia, preventing further damage was first on my mind.

Was it determined that this caused by the hydoflow system? I am taking mine off because the it is a POS. Cells do not fill correctly. Some low some too full.
