Air Compressor ??

OK, I put my old Melex up on jack stands to start working on a home made lift and ran into trouble on the first job...removing the rear wheels. My wimpy little pancake compressor just doesn't have what it takes to run an impact wrench. It's time for a real air compressor. I took a look on Craig's list and there are about as many types, sizes and styles of air compressors out there as there are old golf carts. What do I really need to run an impact wrench and the other standard air tools? Should I stay with a new unit or are used compressors a good value? Thanks in advance.

I found a closeout at lowes. A 20 gal upright Devilbis (sp?) with a 2.5 hp motor. It works great ..... for years now. Best part was the price of $150.

For using an impact wrench, you need a compressor with at least a 20 gal. tank.. Also, use the larger 3/8" quick connects, the smaller 1/4" connectors will turn even the toughest impact into a wimp...

I have a Cambell Hausfeld 3HP/25gal. tank in the garage.. It has a cast iron 2 cylinder pump.. It has no problem running anything you can hook up to it..

Air is the way to go! If you get a compressor you wont want to use a wrench lol

I have 2 air comps, 1 is a 5 hp upright, oil comp. The other is a 3hp upright oiless, used to blow mobile homes out for winter. The 60 gallon hp works great for long heavy use of tools, the 33 gal does a good job for what I bought it for, it does run most power tools well. The one thing you need to look at is cfm's (cubic feet per minute) not enough will run the poop out of the comp, too many and you pay for somthing you don't need. The oiless is a craftsman and came with a tool kit, ratchet, impact, and a air chissile. Was on sale at the time for $250.00, I needed another impact for work so worked out ok for me.

I actually bought this one. The CFM rating has been great for any tasks I have had around the house and shop. When using rotary tools (impact, ratchet) it replenishes quickly, has a compact foot print, and is portable enough to move around.
I was told to pay specific attention to the CFM, that will tell you what tools it will run best.

Go to Sears and see if they have anything on the floor that has a discount. I found a 30 gal Craftsman for about 150.00 less than new and the only thing wrong with it was the wheel was broken and then fixed by Sears, they just could not sell it as new. Good deal for me!!!

Go big or Go home! Get what you need and then some, never know what your gonna want to run later on. This is a IR 80 gallon 7 hp 230v single phase unit that will run anything. I can run my blast cabinet all day without a problem or power the plasma cutter to cut as much as needed. Just remeber no one can tell what future air requirements you'll need so go in with your guns loaded.
