Default 240 for plasma

Any electricians in the house? Picked up a plasma that calls for240 and want to make sure I'm not under thinking this. Have a separate panel in the garage with plenty of room. Was going to add a dual slot breaker and run 6agw to a new outlet with breaker and m/f outlets for 50a. Am I on the right path?

Also, can I add multiple 240 boxes on the same circuit if I'm not using more than one at the same time? Looking at this because most cost effective on wiring is 50' purchase and it would be nice to have multiple plug in choices.

I'm not an electrician but 6agw is rated for 65amps so you are good there. As for putting multiple plugs on one circuit, I don't know if it would meet any codes or not but as far as safety I'd think you would be good since you will only be running off one at a time.

Just remember that if you ever move/sell your place the next person may not know your thinking and could overload the system.

You should really check and do some research with people that really know. Info you get on the internet can be hit and miss as far as accuracy.

Multiple 240 outlets one a single breaker do not meet code. Installing a disconnect at each outlet would almost satisfy the safety issue. Almost. This way the end user becomes responsible for activation.

#6 is right, but i think you will have trouble pigtailing to run several in series.
invest in a few more breakers and boxes.
running #12 or #14 in a house thru 8-12 units is easy because you can pigtail
IMO

Instead of setting up extra plugs, do as I did, get yourself a 220 extension cord. I've bought a couple actually at two different auctions.

I also have my welder and plasma cutter set up on a rolling cart that I can move anywhere including outside the garage when I need too.

Dawg that was my thought with the extension after reading. Could probably make one with extra 6agw but probably would be a bit stiff.

The cords I have are woven copper wire in a flexible outer case. It's just like an extension cord but is about 4 times the size of your typical extension cord.

Code allows you to run multiple outlets on one breaker. The breaker is sized to protect the wire and the outlet. The breaker should be sized to trip at a lower amp than the wire and outlet are rated for even though most houses are wired with 15 amp receptacles for a wall outlet and the breakers are rated at 20 amps. When you wire a house you plan the number of outlets by what you will have running on that circuit at on time. That's the reason you might have 6 outlets in a living room on one circuit but no more than two in a kitchen. If you decide to make an extension cord ask for so cord, it has a higher strand count and a softer covering.

Agreed for 120v but not for 240v.

It's no different for 120 or 240. We have even run multiple outlets at times for 480 volts at work. The last NFPA 70 class I had was about 3 years ago and unless something has changed its legal.
