Pole Barn VS. Steel Building?
Alright, let's hear it. What are the pros and cons of each and what made you decide to pick one over the other when building your workshop/ garage? Insulated or non insulated? And also input on the foundation. Wood, Concrete slab, gravel? If concrete how thick? Considering something 30x40 to 40x40 range.

Re: Pole Barn VS. Steel Building?
My son and daughter in law just got married in a pole barn. In central florida as a matter of fact. I like the ease of building a pole barn. I like the idea of keeping critters out of my shop personally. For that reason, I'd probably go steel building with a slab. But concrete really drives up the price. I believe the slab thickness would depend on a few things but mostly what you plan on putting or storing on it. Typical 3-1/2" slab should be fine. I believe you can google foundation details for such structures. I am in the thought stages of how big of steel building I want or can afford. I plan on doing 75% of the work so digging foundations, tieing bar......... How much of the work you plan on doing yourself? I would also do an insulated one, with an exhaust fan for circulation. I would think the natural environment would be a big thing to consider for such a structure as well.

Re: Pole Barn VS. Steel Building?
As a locksmith (and ex-door hanger), I absolutely hate the cheap, fiberglass pole building entry doors!
there's nothing "standard" about them, and after a year or 2 of heavy use, they'll start to fall off the hinges! I'd strongly suggest upgrading them if you go that route! Just my .02 |

Re: Pole Barn VS. Steel Building?
I have a pole building with concrete floor. I didn't build it but it is well built. I have no idea of how thick the concrete is but Vinny is correct, it will add greatly to the cost of a building. But, while a building with a gravel floor is better than no building, I'd still spring for the concrete. And my garage door is steel.
The one difference between the steel and pole buildings I would think would be difference in cost. |

Re: Pole Barn VS. Steel Building?
I did a 24x32x10 pole building with steel sides and roof, 4" slab w/4000 psi mix. Wouldn't do it any other way, except maybe bigger if your budget allows. Make sure you run enough electric out there to run multiple tools like compressors and welders. I have 100 amp in mine.

Termites don't eat steel.
I have a building I built with metal studs and put metal on the walls and roof. (all standard metal roof panels from local roof company) This is my 20x30 building I use as a shop. My 30x 30 building for camper, jeep and kayak storage.... Light poles and roof trusses. Then metal walls and roof. Cost to cubic footage was my issue. Poles were free, and I wanted 14 ft walls. |

Re: Pole Barn VS. Steel Building?
We have a pole barn with steel siding. 3 1/2 inch concrete except in the bay where there is a lift - 6" there. Amish built (Ohio). We did the electric and insulation ourselves. We put OSB plywood 10' up the side walls

Re: Pole Barn VS. Steel Building?
I have been researching steel garage/workshops recently as I am getting ready to put one up. I like the idea of the pole barn with steel siding and roof however I have found that I can get a steel garage for roughly the same price and termites don't eat steel.
