Any Tips While Using Drill Press—- To Keep Clean
Anyone have any tips for keeping the mess to a minimum while using a drill press?
I usually clamp the shop vac near the tip while in use but it doesn’t really catch much.... maybe maybe 50%. Tryin to keep metal from shooting all over. Wood is not nearly as bad. Thoughts? Suggestions? |

Swarf is a fact of life on a drill press. Slower speed will reduce the "spread pattern" but it will still wander. Be careful of putting anything rigid [or valuable] near the drill because good "curly cues" will grab anything in their path. I have had them rip the chain holding my gib key right off the press. Look on the plus side, a pail full of swarf means you got some good work done!

Hey guys, I just happened to see this post.... Be careful using a Shop-Vac to clean up metal shavings. We were mounting "Low Clearance" signs on bridges a while back, and burned up more than a couple nice vacs, doing just that. We were dealing with a lot of shavings, but over the course of a season, I get quite a pile in my workshop.. I usually use a magnet to clean up steel, but if I'm working aluminum or stainless, then I'll just use gloves and scoop it into a bucket.
I actually built a 3-sided surround for my bench top drill press, from old road signs ( They make more than nice floorboards haha ). That way, the shavings stay confined to that area, or just hit me and fall to the floor. Can only use them on smaller items, but they save a lot of cleaning up. |
