Portable Drill press attachment?
I'm sure we've all been there. You're drilling in a spot where you just cannot get good leverage, whether it's a tight spot, overhead, etc. Does anyone know of some kind of clamping type device that will make getting good leverage in those awkward positions easier? At times I'm either taking forever to get a hole drilled or ruining good bits. Doesn't even have to be a "device". Maybe even just good tips or tricks to get that good leverage in an awkward situation.

Re: Portable Drill press attachment?
I found this:
But I sure don't think it's worth what they're asking! I mostly need something for more leverage on the bit than I can provide with certain scenarios. Sorry link didn't work. See below. Last edited by ecaldwell78; 03-23-2018 at 10:11 AM.. Reason: link |

Re: Portable Drill press attachment?
Do you have 135 degree split points? I find they drill well with less pressure in metal. Don't drill fast in wood though but they aren't meant for that.

Re: Portable Drill press attachment?
I usually just use the 118 degree standard points. I'll have to pick up a few 135's and try them out. The titanium bits I've been using have served me well but I may make the move to cobalt. I've heard they'll last longer and cut better through metal. There are just some times I cannot get into a position to really put my weight behind it. So moral of the story is don't cheap out on bits and you won't be looking for gimmicks like the one I posted above!

Re: Portable Drill press attachment?
I've often used a 2x4 or piece of pipe as a lever to apply pressure to the hand drill. If there isn't anywhere to pry from sometimes a strategically placed c-clamp will provide the pry point. In the trades we used to refer to this as using an "old man".

Re: Portable Drill press attachment?
Cobalt and titanium don't transfer heat worth a darn. VERY easy to burn in a hand drill. I use high speed steel and the newer M7 steel. The M7 will drill leaf springs no prob. Chicago-Latrobe, Morse and Norseman are decent drills that come to mind.
