yes you can build a strong cage out of that but mine out of 1.75" .120wall HREW will last longer and be stronger. Sorry maybe I just think bumpers and cages should be built to last
What point did I miss? The only point I made is that the JD bender doesn't have dies for flat stock - did you quote the right reply?

Let me clear up two of the items sence I posted one of them,

My quote pointed out that the shop outfitter bender propsed only went to inch and a quarter tube, and the orginal posted asked for comments on a tube/pipe bender, not a universal bender. although that bender is nice doing the flat stock etc its not practical when using it to do just tube, Because it is limited on how large a tube can go, the JD benders can go up to 2 inch, which most roll cages are built from 1 1/2 or 1 5/8 depending on the applications, both of which the sizes are to large for the universal bender, That was the point I tried to make.

As for the JD bender, yes dies are expenceve, but if you read on the shop outfitter bender, that too you have to buy there dies seperatly as well. And when you compare needing only a few sizes of dies, Its much more cost effective to go the JD route than the shop outfitter route. If you use the shopoutfitter for other purposes as well then my statement is false, but we are still only talking about tube.

And as for Pggroves repley to Keiths comment, We all know there is a difference when it comes to the type of tube you use, But he was not comparing the tube types, he was simply comparing the size of the most commen bought type of tubing. As he was pointing out a 1.75 size tube makes a stronger cage that 1.25 (rolled tube) plus it looks better in my opinion.

just want to get everyone on the same page,

Were all here for fun guys

Brian

Thanks for everyone's response. The JD bender looks like it will suit my needs the best. Now if somebody would please point me in the right direction to find a stash of cash to buy it...

Thanks for clearing that up Brian. I wish I had a JD bender.....I spoke to a guy at their shop who said the Metal by the Foot guys have developed flat stock dies for the JD2 - effectively turning it into a more universal device. No pricing was available on 8/30/07 - but here is the contact info: Metal by the Foot Inc.816-241-5550

I have a JD2'd bender at home that I use for tube work and I'm pretty happy with it. But at school (race car shop) we have a mittler brothers set up with aluminum dies and a hydro ram. its a very simple setup and is a verticle bender instead of a horizontal bender. Works great and you can get square tube dies for it.

What size cages are you guys using on your carts? I have a 1.5" die and a 1.75" die for the full size buggies (Jeeps) but that seems way too big for a golf cart.

I have the JD2, it's a very good bender, I tried the Harbor Freight hyd. bender, it's not even in the same class. I have built 2 cages so far with the JD and you can duplicate bends real easy. The dies are expensive but the finished product makes it worth the cost.
I have the Armstrong setup on my bender LOL, also built a longer handle.

ya the HF isn't a mandrel bender. So it kinks the tube. Which hurts the integrity of the tube
