Even though I'm not the guy that started this thread, I like all this info I'm getting about these helmets especially considering some of you guys weld for a living. This is good stuff.

Thanks for all the info!! I'm currently taking a 2 year welding course at my local tech college and weld for about 4 hours a day M-Th. I'm just starting overhead stick welding and it's a b!#ch. I might try one from Tractor Supply that way I can bring it back if its not any good.

extreme,
i have number 8 on the list at ram for work...but this is way to costly for the average guy welding at home unless you are doing ALOT of welding.
the cheaper models from harbor or northern tool may look like crap or look chincy, but as a whole, they are a good hood for what you want to do.
i would suggest a cheaper hood for home unless as i said you are going to be doing alot of welding.

I would try going to a tractor supply or an Agri supply or whatever you have in that area and go look around...

I only have one bit of advice, and I'm qualified to give it. I've been welding since 1973, you only get 1 pair of eyes forever, buy quality equipment, keep new cover plates on it, and wear some kind of safety glasses under it. 1 pair of eyes forever.

My $.02 Took a class at the local vocational school so I could get my card. Bought a Harbor $50 dollar model for the class and it did ok. The instructor bought one for home use he welds daily at work. If I was welding on a daily basis would buy a better helmet but don't use often. I did pay the extra for the extended warranty after the class was over they gave me a new one after the one broke no idea how ehh ehh ehh. You spend what you have, when started class had the money for el cheepo because was pay child support now could spend more just don't weld much, but this helmet works for all types but if was tigging much would buy a much better one.
