Default Installing HD Springs

I know to many this will sound silly, Last night i had a customer come in and ask me if i could install the HD rear spring on there shock for a Yamaha G16..

spend $100. for HD springs... not $300 for new shock w/HD springs

This is really is a do it yourself job..
the hardest part is removing the rear wheel and the 2 shock mount bolts

first do you need to save the old springs?

you have to option to remove the spring
1) use a spring/strut compressor - to save spring
just be careful, if the compressor you use slip, you can pinch your fingers..ouch

2) cut the spring to remove - this is my choice, faster and the safest
way to get them off, just use a hack saw, air cut of tool, saws all even a touch if your careful, just make sure the flame is facing away from the shock.

1) ok here goes, hold the shock in a vise ( use 2 piece of 2x4 with a wedge cut in them to hold the shock with out marking or denting the shock..

2) cut the spring (using your tool of choice) about half way down from top of spring about 1" below were the spring starts having a gap.. the question most ask will this thing fly apart... NO. just a little snap and the spring is lose.

3) next you just push down on the top and twist the retainer and remove..
(now is a good time to clean and paint them old dirty rusty shocks)

4) with the shock still in vise, slide the HD spring on the shock, then put the top ring back on and turn to lock in place.

5) slide the lock collar on the bottom of the shock, make sure you keep the marks on the collar lines up (there will be a line on one side of collar) if you turn one half the wrong way they can pinch the shock. (make sure to use some blue loctite to the allens screws so they don't ever come loose.

there is no need to compress the new spring, it is a snug fit but the collar is what take up the space and makes this an easy install with nothing more than a few normal hand tools...

the HD spring is a must if you have a rear flip/flop seat to keep the cart level with passenger or a load. this does stiffen the ride a lot, but does what it need to make you toy carry more..
