I want to somehow get internet and cable run to my shop but without having to pay more each month since we already have it in the house. :D I would like to setup an office, have internet radio(our radio stations in Chattanooga are trash), and a TV in the shop. My shop is about 300ft from the house. Idea #1 was to buy a 100 yd cable cord to run underground but a quick ebay search leaves me to assume they dont come that long? Next thought was wireless from the house modem, do think they reach that distance?

AHAH! One minute of Google search proves more effective than ebay. Apparently I need a 300ft "outdoor ethernet cable"? We have a modem(or is it a router?) that connects 4 computers in our house. Will it do me good if I connect this cable to the modem, run underground in PVC conduit to the shop, and it just simply plugs into the back of my computer? That all there is to it? Who sells a cable like this locally? http://cgi.ebay.com/ALVARION-300FT-E...item1c0ffa3987

As the crow flys, you should be able to use a wireless router, the cable has a limit of how far you can run, some wireless routers will trasmit well over 1000 feet, thats the route I would take.

Wire is probably a better solution for you. I wouldn't buy a 300' made up cable though. I'd buy a spool of wire and terminate it yourself. It's easy. The connectors are color coded as are the cable pairs. Then you can wire in a wall jack where you want your PC to go and make it look nice. George | |

I have a belkin router that does well over 300' from the house. I've been able to log on my network from way up the road, easily better than 800' and not in direct line of sight. This will also depends on what setup your using to pickup the signal. our ipod touch's are limited and won't pickup inside one of the utility buildings that's about 300' away. it's all aluminium, I guess that kinda screws with the signal. In my opinion wireless is the only way to go even if you have to use two routers and just have one setup as a bridge. I know you can get antennas for them also to better the signal. I'm up to 21 wireless devices hooked up to this router right now, with several spots set aside for friends and family to use their laptops when they come over.

All you need to do is buy a wireless router like a lynksys WRT54G(S) or similar with detachable antennas, and use a patch antenna, yagi or parabolic and your set. No wires to run at all. Any of those can be pointed straight towards your garage. I've done 11 mile shoots before....300 foot is easy. 300 ft of wire is about max you can run with cat5 wire. Its probly going to be cheaper to go wireless too.

This may sound somewhat "simplistic" but if I buy a router with a detachable antenna, plug in a patch antenna to the router and point it to my garage, can I simply take my laptop and start using it on the internet with no other additional requirements. Thanks Fred
