Welders???
Ok guys, In need of a good "reasonable" welder. Will a 110 mig do the trick for simple fab work??? Best type??? Place to buy??? Who's working with what out there???

I think a 110v welder is not enough heat to do fab work. I am using a 175 lincoln bottle mig but the 185 takes a spool gun for aluminum... If i was buying today that is what I would do, I am sure you will get as many different answers as you get responses

What kind of "fab" work are you planning? A 110 is fine for liittle and small jobs, but not if you're doing things like suspension, axles or cages...
Also depends on what you want to spend - kinda like buying a cart... |

I bought a 110 welder because I got it cheap and don't do anything heavy.
It doesn't weld like my old 220 volt 225 amp. You may find a good used one in these times, Insist on welding with it. Take some scrap with you to buy it. |

I use a Lincoln 135SP 110VAC welder. It welds everything I need to weld, including aluminum. Capable of 1/4 inch with high heat settings and multipule passes. I bevel all my joints to ensure penitration and turn up the heat until I melt thru or have undercut then crank it back down just a hair. (No wise cracks abouot what kind of hair). If I was to start over on buying tooling I would buy another 110 mig. But put money aside for Millers new Tig/Stick welder that runs on 110 and 220 both. I bought the 110 for protability and being able to use it in places that 220 would not be available. Lincoln does not make them any more, they were replaced with the 140 model. Miller Econotig (GTAW) 200 or Miller Maxstar 200 (GTAW). You have to have AC to GTAW on Aluminum. Each one is about $1600 and have dual voltage 115 or 220 with an adapter. You can use your laundry dryer plug for the 220v. If not doing aluminum the Maxstar 200 is all you could ever need.

I prefer a 220VAC unit to a 110VAC unit.
A good place to shop for a welder is TSC (Tractor Supply Company), or a good local welding supply company. |
